Is squat or deadlift the single best exercise....
DEADLIFT
DEADLIFT

Can I go neither and say Farmer's Walk?
If I have to pick squat or deadlift, squat because it's harder for me personally.
I think Farmer's Walk is the best overall, though bc it's a trap bar deadlift (which is almost a squat) followed by walking the weight.

If you tell me I can only do one exercise ever again, I'm going with deadlift hands down. And I can't even deadlift for real right now.

I vote deadlift. If your technique is sound, you can become one cock strong bastard doing deadlifts.
But, squat is still part if the big 3. It will always have a home in my program.

Deadlift because it’s basically a suped up squat.

Im older than both of you by a bit, and was pulling 210 kg this morning.
deadlifts dont hurt your back, they encase it in iron.

do deadlifts dont hurt your back. But poor form, or a mistake will. Personally im not willing to risk it. I am in no way saying deadlifts are not good. They are awesome. Just speaking for myself, and not wanting to slip up. Seen too many people with back issues that never go away.

Hmm.....
Difficult choice, but my deadlifts increased over a period when I didn’t deadlift at all, just Front and Back squats along with other lifting.
Since a tough deadlift workout can wreck your CNS for a 3-4 days (possibly longer) I choose Squats.
So...
SQUATS

Neither, but deadlift is possibly the worst. No one over 28 should ever do them.

That’s a very obtuse view on the lift.
I worked out at Fletcher’s House of Power for a while and there were 3 guys in their late 60s, early 70s, (Triple D I called them: Dale, Dodd and Dave) and they performed deadlifts on a regular basis. They swore their backs felt better every week after performing DL.

You will never convince people like that. No use trying.

I'm pulling up on 37 and still hit it hard. Form, recovery and intelligence matters more than exercise selection.
Sooner or later, your friend is gonna want you to help him move a heavy couch, and if all you've done is machine bicep curls, you might have a bad time. Heck, I hurt my neck sleeping on it wrong. Injury prevention and management is a huge part of lifting.
