If you're solely worried about insulin response sure. But fiber is a carbohydrate and soluable fiber definitely has calories. Fiber has a roughly 30% TEF, so usually 1-3 calories/gram. Not enough to sabotage a diet, but some nonetheless. I personally prefer to count fiber in carbs.

What is good to eat to curb your hunger when you first start Keto and are trying to fast?
Snake Oil?
Snake Oil?

If you’re fasting the only thing is the ketoaid I posted in the OP. You can also drink coffee but that will make you more hungry IMO.

Can you drink Powerade zero for electrolytes?
Snake juice/ketoaid isn't that nasty, but if you cannot sip on it because of taste you can make your own capsules- order 000 caps on Amazon, that equals 1/4 tsp. DO NOT TAKE NoSalt/NuSalt in cap form, will tear your stomach up. You can order potassium citrate on Amazon, much more gentle.

10 patients, 10 years - Long term follow-up of cardiovascular risk factors in Glut1 deficiency treated with ketogenic diet therapies: A prospective, multicenter case series.
quote:
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Glut1 Deficiency (Glut1D) is caused by impaired glucose transport into brain. The resulting epileptic encephalopathy and movement disorders can be treated effectively by high-fat carbohydrate-restricted ketogenic diet therapies (KDT) mimicking fasting and providing ketones as an alternative cerebral fuel. Recently 6-24 months follow-ups of epileptic patients reported elevated blood lipids and intima thickening of the carotid artery raising concerns about potential cardiovascular risks by KDT. To clarify potential cardiovascular risks we performed a prospective 10 year follow up of 10 Glut1D patients.
METHODS: Between August 2001 and January 2016 we enrolled Glut1D patients on KDT at two hospitals in Germany in this prospective, multicenter case series. The minimal follow up was 10 years. Standard deviation scores (SDS) of body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-/LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG) before initiation of KDT were compared with respective values at 6 months, 2, 5 years, and 10 years after initiation. After 10 years on KDT cardiovascular risk, assessed by BMI, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) measurement, and blood pressure, was compared to a healthy reference population (n = 550). RESULTS: Baseline and 10 year follow-up investigations were available for 10 individuals with Glut1D on KDT. After two years on KDT BMI increased significantly, while total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol decreased. Within 3-5 years on KDT these differences disappeared, and after 10 years blood lipid parameters reflected the situation at initiation of KDT. Prior to KDT one child had dyslipidaemia, but no child after 10 years on KDT. No significant differences were observed with respect to BMI SDS (p = 0.26), CIMT (p = 0.63) or systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SDS p = 0.11 and p = 0.37, respectively) in Glut1D children treated with KDT for at least 10 years compared to healthy controls.
CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to previous short-term reports on adverse effects of KDT, 10-year follow-up did not identify cardiovascular risks of dietary treatment for Glut1D.

I'm always curious what it looks like to "try" keto and have it not work. I can think of lots of ways this happens, but none of them the fault of eating high fat and low carbs.
I can't tell you the last time I counted macros or calories, and I remain fat adapted, low body fat%, fueled for indurance activities and weight/cross-training. And I eat a very wide array of stuff.
I think many people who dabble and "fail," just don't believe our bodies actually thrive on lots of fat and salt and they can't truly convince themselves that we don't actually need carbs (including fiber) for most of our daily activities, and don't learn all the ways you can have a varied diet while not carb binging.
I can see this being driven in part by vestigial guilt caused by the decades or horrible dietary advice that still pervades.
And another factor may be people's complete misunderstanding and fear re: "cholesterol."

It's pretty simple to me. It's a hard diet to follow for a lot of people whether they buy into the science or not. I eat very clean, but I don't prefer a lot of the stuff keto people eat. I prefer chicken and lean pork over red meat a lot of times, and I don't like a lot of those oils. Just personal preference.

Same here. And I don't eat them. I think adding in a quarterly fast and maintaining some form of time/restricted eating opens things up.
We are just conditioned to think we have to eat 3 meals a day plus snacks.
As far as oils go, I use oil to cook and in salad dressings and mayo (avocado oil mayo). I'm not guzzling MCT and bulletproof coffee.
It does take a little creativity to broaden the menu but it isn't difficult.

Thank you for being reasonable in this thread. There are ways around what you talked about, but you have to go out of your way to fit your macros in which I think is your concern.
With someone in this instance I would say go ahead and eat the chicken and pork. We would just need to keep a very close eye on your overall protein intake for the day and balance it out with maybe a cheese dip or mayonnaise based sauce.
Not a single oil is necessary for Keto. It’s just an easy way to get a quick fat burning, energy boost (MCT oil).

I think you're overestimating the average person's willpower. It's not that keto "didn't work", it's that they didn't stick to it. Because it's no more sustainable than any other diet, and people generally suck at sticking to diets (myself included, before anyone points that out). Most people will not stick to keto for 3-4 months unbroken for those sugar/carb cravings to subside.
People fail because they feel restricted and eventually cave in and want that bread, cookie, or cake, or whatever it may be that's off-limits. They then eat 5 cookies because they gave in and said "frick it".. then it spirals.

Just imagine how hard it is to instruct someone to live on food that doesn't come in a box. That's the only rule, no boxes. Think of how mind blowing that is to someone who isn't in the weeds here. That kind of living is fairly decent, yet extreme, when we consider the amount of crap loaded in grocery stores today. It is truly sickening and disgusting what frakenfood poison we currently have in there.

exactly this. I don't understand how that is so hard to get through to some people. I personally prefer keto, but some people hate it.
but i really do feel it would do almost every single person good to go 30 days without any carbs at all. If for nothing else to learn to step out of your comfort zone.

Keto is a great way to lose weight fast. It got me down 15lbs and 2 belt loops in a month.
Longterm, yeah I like apples. And black beans. And unlike diet coke, they are forbidden on a keto diet(not subtle). I love Mediterranean food as well, which again, is poison to the keto or die crew. So i'll use keto when I need it, but as a longterm lifestyle, no thanks.
