Getting back home finally today. Few more easy runs before getting back into workouts. Body feels recovered though pretty much

Charity 5k this morning. Set a new PR & finally broke the 19 minute mark!

Walter you killed it man!
50 degree temps came in clutch for a big 10k in Shreveport this morning. Plagued by the always stacked 30-ish age group with 5th @ 7:06 pace

Thanks Polar Pop! I was also aided by the nice temps out there. You smoked that 10k! Impressive

I've noticed 35-39 STACKED at local races. What's up with that?

in my experience, guys that had kids in their mid-late 20s are starting to have a bit more free time and ability to take off on runs as their kids enter teenage years. i never would have spent as much time running when my kids were younger.
i'm not an overly fast guy after a mile but there's one time i ran one with my son and he did pretty good at a 24:00 pace. i just stuck with him. he killed his age bracket (he was 8 at the time)
i somehow won my age group and was kinda surprised. then when i went and got my medal, i saw that i "won" by almost 5 minutes and 2nd and third place outweighed me by 40 lbs.
took a little bit of the shine off of it for me.
my only 5k not running with my kid or wife was a small charity race and i was able to pull out a 21 minute race. 1-5 place was 35-40 yo males, all under 22. probably the last time i'll medal.
eta: 42 degrees this morning on a short little run. first long sleeved run of the year.

Recovery run today. 5.5 miles at a 9:50 pace. Average HR 143. Felt great out there today. Nice to run in the late afternoon and not be a hot, sweaty mess. The ladies were out on the Lakeshore trail today.

Today For the first time ever I ran 5 miles with zero walking. Not just that but I averaged a 10’13” pace. Certainly not competing with many in here but 1 year ago, I’d have been ecstatic about a one mile run with that pace. I’ve been working hard to be able to complete the 10k I’m signed up for this November and I gained some much needed confidence today not only in completing it but with a much faster pace than I was holding myself to previously.

That’s fantastic! You following some sort of training plan for the 10K? In a run group?

Running by myself with a plan I printed from the 10k website. It really just gives distances to run through the weeks leading up to race day. On the days off I do weights or sprints.

That’s awesome. I remember the first time I ran a full hour. I couldn’t even imagine that being possible when I started. I ran 2 this morning. It’s amazing what your body can do.

3 miles this AM. 8:30 pace. Average HR 164. Getting cool out there.

20 yesterday really didn’t go well. I drove 5 hours in the morning, wasn’t properly hydrated or nourished in general, and just wasn’t feeling it from the start. Had to find a shake shack for a pit stop half way through. By mile 16 my legs had enough. I should have stopped. I felt like shite last night. My body was so hot. And I can’t do stairs this morning and my building’s elevator is broken. Cool. Honestly felt worse than I did post actual marathon last year.
Taking today off. Hoping I can trot out a few miles Tuesday but won’t force it. Three weeks till NYC so I’m very excited for this taper.

Has anyone used the coaching feature through their garmin watch? I've decided to run the Louisiana Half Marathon, and I'm looking for a plan. Looking at Greg McMillan's plan to be specific. I'm thinking that if my watch is doing all of the planning/work, then all I have to do is go run.

I used a McMillan plan for a half and a 10k. It was fine, but I never ran a goal race for either because all the races were virtual then. Those are really the only self directed plans I ever followed, so I don’t have anything to compare them to.

Roads suck in Bossier City but at least it’s cool and flat. 5 miles at 8:45/mile. Got lost once or twice, but made it back OK.

Don't post in here much, but its generally a combo of 4 reasons:
1) Competitive runners in their last window of running as fast/maybe faster than they did in their teens/early 20s, so they go at it hard again (this was kinda me).
2) Really good athletes transitioning from other sports due to age, wear and tear, injury, etc, and focusing on running.
3) People reaching the point in their early-mid 30s where they can't stay in good shape running twice a week, so they commit and go at it hard.
4) They are years removed from killer training regimens and they've forgot how much it sucks sometimes, but are in a better place in life (family, money, etc.) so they re-commit with better life balance and run faster.

i see this as the primary two reasons. at 35, you're probably at a spot where your wife isn't going to kill you for leaving her at home with kids that can take care of or entertain themselves for a run, but you're still young enough to have some spry legs.

This is me. My kids are 5 and 8, so I can roll out early in the mornings while my wife sleeps in and they get their own cereal and turn the tv on.
My wife also got into triathlons a few years ago so she cant bitch about my long runs/rides since she does the same.
