Back on the train after a hectic few days. An easy five at 9:53/mi. Great HR of 143. I have a tempo run tomorrow with 1 easy mile, 4 at 8:28, and then 1 easy mile to close.

Today was my first run in my new shoes: Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38s. It was very nice. They had plenty of cushion and some spring/pop too.

Can we talk about nutrition and hydration for a marathon?

I have an 11 miler on Saturday. I've run longer than that on several occasions but I've never eaten during a run before and very rarely have I had a drink. The only times I've stopped to get some water was when it was really hot and my body was telling me to get some fluid pronto.

I think I am going to plan to eat every 8 miles during my upcoming marathon. to get used to doing that, I am going to eat a gel (or something like that) at mile 8 on my run Saturday.

I've also never had a drink before during a race. Is this something I should be concerned with for the marathon distance? Should I plan to have a drink every 8 miles too?

I don’t have experience in the marathon distance myself (longest run 18 mi). However, I have found what works best for me is a gel every 45 mins. You want to make sure when you intake nutrition that you are washing it down with some water or sports drink. Could mess up your stomach otherwise and make for a bad time.

I’d be interested to hear what the longer distance guys in the thread have to say. They will be able to provide better insight, but just wanted to share what works for me.

There are gels that don’t require water. I used one Science In Sport gel for a half I ran and it worked fine. Everyone is different though, so best to try different gels on training runs and see what works/doesn’t work.

As for water/hydration, I have a small Nathan handheld soft side bottle I use. Only use it on long runs over 8 miles when it’s really hot and I’ll be sweating a lot. Again, everyone is different though…I’ve seen some people say hydrate every 45 minutes regardless of temps, I’ve seen others that only hydrate if running 10+ miles.

Edit: Isotonic gels are the ones that do not require water. Do some research on the different types of gels and determine which you think will work best for you.

For long runs my go to has been:

16oz Skratch Formula and Honey Stinger Waffle 30-60 mins before
Gel or Chews every 4-6 miles
Gatorade endurance formula as needed

For my next block I plan to increase the gel/chew frequency, probably to every 3-4 miles. I'm done delaying the gel because I don't feel I need it. I'm curious if there is a negative effect with that strategy.

As you can see this isn't a one size fits all situation. General rule of thumb is nutrition every 45 minutes if activity is longer than 1.5hr. Drink before you are thirsty. once you are thirsty you could already be in dehydrated zone. with that said no one probably follows this for every run that meets the base standard of 1.5hr. Your body has way more stored energy in it that you think especially if you run first thing in the morning and then if you eat something before heading out not much reason you would need any additional nutrition unless you are hitting 2.5hr, in my opinion and personal experience. My longest marathon training run is probably 16ish miles and I don't take food or water. During actual race I go through 3-4 gels and drink what i can grab on the course which they usually have water/sports drink every 2 miles maybe even every mile. I would guess in total I may take in 8oz of fluid. grabbing and drinking out of those little cups on the move ain't easy.

Good point KS. That’s another thing—I’ve always found it to be a pain in the arse to grab and drink those without stopping. I have a 16 oz Nathan bottle like Jordan mentioned (mine is the belt version) but I get tired of carrying it around after a while.

I never take hydration supplements of any type before runs. There are electrolytes in my recovery drink (Tailwinds, which rocks BTW). I always drink a good bit before races and try to pee a few times, but nothing excessive.

Should I up my water intake for the full marathon?

Would y’all say that a garmin 35 that I wear is an optimal enough heart rate monitor to do maffetone with?

Like is the $100 chest strap worth it or does what I have suffice?

I had a Forerunner 35 and the heart rate sensor gave me serious issues. There were times where it would get stuck and not move throughout my run. For instance, my heart rate for my half marathon stayed at 137 from miles 0.4 to 13.1, which is simply incorrect. There were other times where it would increase my heart rate by a given interval at a given time. For instance, my heart rate would increase 3 beats per minute every 0.10 mile. My heart rate chart on Garmin Connect would look like steps after that.

Full disclosure: I bought my 35 refurbished.

Yeah I have had some of these issues as well. Guess I’ll just splurge and get the hrm - dual for $55

I had a good tempo run today (1 mile easy, 4 at 8:28, 1 mile easy):

1 - 10:03
2 - 8:21
3 - 8:17
4 - 8:15
5 - 8:26
6 - 9:52

My HR spiked to 179 - 184 or so at the end of mile 5. I think my watch was acting up because I sure didn't feel like it.

I have a slow 11 miler on Saturday (9:54/mi). I don't have anything planned for Friday, but I think I am going to do an easy 4 or 5 miler at the same pace tomorrow just to keep fresh.

Start experiencing on your long runs to see what works. Like others said it all depends on what your body needs.

Hal higdon always like to point out that bill rodgers took four brief brakes including tying his shoe on one of them en route to his 1975 Boston marathon win. If you need to stop to drink the cup of water it won’t kill your race time. It definitely won’t hurt on long runs.

I skipped speedwork and a 15 mile bike earlier this week. Tomorrow is my rest day, but it's also a buddy's 32nd birthday and he wants to do a 32 mile ride to celebrate.

With that in mind, do y'all think it would be dumb to do a hard 32-mile ride 11 mile run planned (at 9:54/mi)? I don't think I'd have any issue with a 15-16 mile ride, but 32 would probably take 1:5X:XX or so. I would also note I've never had any real issues on my long runs thus far.

My other thought was to do Monday's speedwork I skipped or do an easy 5 miles (at 9:54/mi).

What are you training for right now? If you have a cross training day built in you could switch that day.

Personally I wouldn’t do a big bike with any sort of run.

Yeah that’s a far way out. I’d just do the bike ride. No reason to risk overworking anything this early in the cycle.

Tempo run of sorts today. 4.25 miles at a 8:50 pace. Middle two miles at an 8:00 pace. Ran in downtown Savannah, GA. The 200 yr old roads aren’t the greatest to run on. Lots of people out walking and running this AM. Kind of impressive. I’ll try to find a longer route tomorrow and get 10+ in if possible.
