Sounds like everyone might be dealing a little with the fall/winter blues. Sometimes, I have to just try and be grateful out on the road or trail. It's easy to let my competitive side take over at times, but I usually recognize when it is working against me, and I just smile and think about how fortunate I am to be able to run at all much less 12, 15, 22 miles.

I am curious about others' fueling strategies. I honestly never need any extra calories when running less than 16 miles, and in the past I sort of just used gels after that distance because I though I was supposed. I never hit a wall in my marathon and only used a couple of gels. I did start cramping up at around mile 22 (calves then hamstrings) but was able to fight that off enough to finish at about the same pace I had been at the entire race. I actually probably should have been more concerned about electrolytes than carbohydrates. Just something to consider.

Always remember that these long runs are coming on the heel of a week full of mileage. Your legs and body are tired. Come race week, you will be rested and those later miles won't have the effect they do now.

I had the same doubts, especially after my 20 miler. I thought there was no way I could go another 10K, but that week I had logged a total of 40 miles. That won't happen race week.

Looking forward to my 5K Sunday. It'll be the flattest course I've ever run. Hope to put in a good time.

Dittos.

After returning to Atlanta from Montana in August I was counting the days until the first crisp fall day. But I somehow broke my whole body and haven't been able to run at all (I did some long runs at the beach in late august and that broke my vag--i've tried a couple miles here and there but back issues cut that short).

I THINK I'm ready to get back on the pony. I was going to do a 50k near in-laws in SC in January, but I don't see that happening.

I'm going to try a slow run tomorrow and report back. Wish me luck!

I think that for me it the actual marathon training not the running or the weather. Marathon plans are so boring. Boring! I used a hybrid McMillian plan and adjusted it to my strengths.

I was pissy because I got in my head that some turd that is a 4 minute miler was going to kick my arse on an average of 30 miles a week. I have since changed my stance to I’m going to make this guy fricking hurt on the last 10k if I catch him because his miles shouldn’t allow him to finish ahead of me no matter how fast he is.

Game time motherfrickers. I’m ready.

That's the spirit Burt.

I'm just having trouble getting up at 4 am to run. I want to run, I want to train for my next marathon, but damn 4 am sucks lately.

It’s good to see your mind back in the game. Just trust your training, run your race, and you’ll be fine.

That cracked me up. :D

In other news I hit 3 grand for the year this weekend. The 70-80 miles a week have really helped me get a mental edge, especially considering how much speed work I do with the big miles. I really feel that next year is going to be a big year if I stay healthy.

Burt, sounds like you hit the "dark" part of the training schedule. Always happens to me at the end of a marathon block. And that's on a much lighter load than you. You've built up and been on some big mileage for a while. Glad it passed quickly.

Congrats on coming through a monster training block healthy and ready to go. Best of luck this weekend - enjoy the race

But are you going to put that 26.1 sticker on your car's rear window?

My winter blues cure was a 6 miler on Bringle Lake Wilderness Trail in Texarkana this morning. Beautiful wide trails around a pretty lake. Some nice elevation and scenery. Perfect 40 degrees.

No, I’m going to put 114.5 of them on my window.

My friends keep asking me when my 26.2 sticker is going on my truck. I've been looking for the smallest possible sticker that you can only see if you climb into the bed.

Finally signed up for my first half. Going to be running the Mississippi Gulf Coast Half on 12/15.

I’ve been dealing with some nagging hamstring discomfort for the past 2 1/2 weeks so hopefully it will be settled by then. I won’t be doing it any favors as I’m scheduled for a turkey trot 5K Thursday.

Ive been pretty quiet lately but still running.

I quit "clock watching" and just started running for feel and total time. I think the pace watching was/is the cause of my knee/IT/hamstring pain since I did not allow myself to build a proper base and safely increase speed and distance.

5 mile trail race coming up the Saturday after Thanksgiving in Ruston.

NOLA Turkey Day will be my first race since January injuries. I've been running well recently, and just logged my best mileage week so far this year. Still, I do not think I am in as good shape as last year's Turkey Day. Hoping for about 7:30 a mile.

They are actually serving Wild Turkey Old Fashioneds after the race this year, lol. I'll be lucky to make it home.
