Thanks buddy! Means alot!

This is actually what I had/have. Crazy that it’s a common cause of stroke of people under 50 and can be caused by so many activities (none of which I was doing). Or it can be spontaneous as in my situation. Scary shite!

Well I guess we’re all at risk with all the sex we’re having from being popular runners, AMIRITE?!

Ran the Magic City 5K this AM. What a zoo. Nearly 700 people in a shotgun start. My first mile was slower than I had hoped for (8:26), but this was due to negotiating the flotsam and jetsam of kids, adults in costumes, and the people who were just walking it but needed to be at the front. After that, I settled in and paced at my target which was (8:00). Finished with an (8:08) pace and first in my age group and top 70.

Not ready for a half yet. I need to do some 10K’s first. Made that decision today. Really pumped with the results, but the course was extremely flat.

Awesome job

Nothing worse than losing time trying to navigate a sea of stroller pushers that start up front.

And Burt, jesus man, unreal performance

Thanks man, I'm taking this week off and then I have a 5k the following week (last race of the season).

Looks like the marathon distance is the one I have talent for (bummer). I think with another year training under my belt, sub 2:40 isn't out of the question so that's the goal if New York will take me.

Got three races planned for the spring; an 8k, 10k, and half marathon none of which I will be favored to win BTW.

That's a real big bonus to training in NWA, so many good runners up here, I'll never win a big race so I train harder. Hell, my time on Saturday usually would have won by 15 minutes instead I got beat by 2 with 6 guys going under 3.

Everyone up here is getting better so it helps me get better faster. I'm still playing catch up, but the plan is to stay healthy for a year and a half then wreck shop at the master's level. Thanks again everyone.

Welp, got the green light from Neuro today to resume normal operations.

Great to hear, man. You'll feel much better once you get out on the road and are moving again.

Very nice 5K, Aubie.

I think deciding to wait a little longer is a good decision. I don't think you need to necessarily do more than one 10K first, but I think you needed more time to put in the kind of training you would need to race a half and enjoy it. If you still have your sights set on a half, just pick one later in the Spring and race a 10K as part of your training plan.

Anyone else get addicted to running to where going to the gym to lift is a chore? I lift and row at my gym 2x a week to break up the running but I find myself just wishing I ran. I don’t have any plans to “bulk” so I feel like my gym membership is almost a waste at this point.

Yes, and I'm sure most regulars in this thread would agree. All of my strength training revolves around running, but I'd much rather be running than at the gym. I've been accumulating home gym equipment over the last couple of years and have mostly what I need for running strength workouts.

My next race has been scheduled, and I have a goal in mind. The Mountain Goat in Syracuse is a 10 mile run and has an elevation gain of 544 ft. It's in May, and I am about two weeks away from being cleared for running.

Finishers at 60 minutes, 70 minutes, and 80 minutes earn a patch.

I want a patch.

I go to the gym 3-4 days a week for maybe 30-45 mins during lunch time. I focus on one muscle group each trip and just knock it out. I did very little strength training for my first marathon and I'm changing that this time around. No heavy weights, just something to change it up. I also use one day to cross train on the bike.

On a side note, what do you guys do for longer interval training? I typically do ~7-8 miles with 2 mi WU, 2 mi @ ~9:00 or faster pace, 2 mi @ ~8:00 pace, and then 2 mi @ MP.

Running 6 miles today and have my first 10K this Thursday. I'll have to find a half around Bham after Mercedes. There's a 15K in April I have circled.

Cool. I've never raced anything but the typical distances. A 15K would be a good one to do in prep for a half or full.

15K is probably my favorite distance. I'd like to be ready for the Mardi Gras 15K Feb 8th, but that's unlikely. Ran it last year and enjoyed it.

It's in April and when I say it ends less than a mile from my house, I mean it. I could run it and then take a cool down walk back to the house.

Ditto. Didn’t get to run one this year which is a bummer.

@ kb6

3x3 mile @ 10 -15k pace with 4 min jog in between is a good one in preparation for longer stuff. It’s a real good one to go back to for confidence.
