Ok I got out of the comfort zone and ran with the track crew (surprisingly about 7 others) this morning in 22 degrees / windchill 17.

400 warmup
1600 7:17 pace
400 rec
1200 7:20ish pace
400 rec

They kept going down, I fortunately had to head to work.

Not sure yet.

Ran last night in 30 degrees with shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt. I was fine except for my hands. Definitely need some light weight gloves. After the 2nd mile, everything was fine. Not sure if it's conditioning or the weather, but it is becoming easier and easier to add miles and increase my pace.

Cold temps don’t bother me as long as the wind isn’t bad. Lots of people up north would kill to be running in South LA right now lol.

This is my first full training cycle and race in a couple of years, so I am trying to be realistic. I'm not expecting a PR. I'd be happy with a 21:00 to 22:00 5K. That would maybe put me top 3 in my 40-45 age group and put me in great shape for my next training cycle. I think I can drop another minute off my time by the Spring following another solid training cycle.

I agree. I routinely run in temps between 0 and 30 during the winter in Kansas. With the proper clothing, it isn;t bad after 1/4 to 1/2 mile. There's actually nothing nicer than running a snow covered trail when the winds are calm. It's serene.

The winds can get ridiculous here during the winter though. Between December and March, we get many days of negative windchill as low as -30 (single digit temps with 20-40 mph winds). When you combine that with snow, you can't see a damned thing I hit the dreadmill on those days and get back out on the road or trail as soon as the wind calms back down.

Quick rundown on the Garmin 235 after a week of use.

GPS Accuracy: Improved. Actually it kind of pisses me off that my old watch was always short. All my Strava PRs are from training runs not actual races because of this.

Heart Rate: Trash. But we already knew this, which leads me to...

VO2 Calculator: LOL. Says my vO2 is 62. Nope. 56 on my best day. Useless.

Pace: Accurate but takes longer to report for some odd reason.

I upgraded because my used 220’s battery was starting to run down too quickly and it also liked to reset during runs. Uploading became a pain too.

Verdict: If you need a new watch, go base 35 or 45 or jump in with the big boys with a 7 or 900 series.

It’s a 100 dollar watch that they sell for 300 dollars that I bought for 150.

Good to know. My gf has the 45s and likes it...I was struggling to figure out why the 235 costs $100 more than the 45s. They seem really similar. I’m hoping for some good Black Friday/cyber Monday Garmin sales on Amazon, have a $100 gift card to burn and want to upgrade from my Vivosport band.

I just had to do a hard reset on my 235 after an update and call to their customer service.

My GPS was poorly calibrated recently so to keep it honest, I'm just going to consider all current PRs from races, none from unofficial runs or great training days.

It should be good for another couple of years at my current skill level.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the calorie counter algorithm is garbage too. My 16.75 miler last weekend burned a whopping 800 calories. Okay. *he said sarcastically*

Yeah. The formula they use is based partially on HR, and if the HR monitor screws up (they all do periodically), then it it is useless. My chest strap and vivoactive were the most reliable for HR, but even that combo was off for periods of time. My wrist monitor is ridiculous at times. I'll be running EZ, not even breathing hard, and it has my HR at 190.

I ran 5 yesterday in about 33 degrees, windchill 22. I was a bit overdressed but we level jumped big time with this cold snap and I overcompensated. Had on long pants, a thick long sleeve turtleneck exercise shirt, running vest, wool cap and gloves. Could have done without the vest but needed the rest. My old muscles need warmth!

I got in a couple of easy miles in 31 degrees this morning.

shorts, jacket (really light but warm arcteryx), beanie and a face buff which was life saving.

Getting used to the cold weather and really enjoying not panting for water after 10 minutes.

My beanie is a must on my bald head. Unless it's in the 20s or colder, I usually have to take it off after a few miles though. I use a balaclava/hood combo when it's below 10 degrees. It keeps most of my face covered, but I can easily pull it down below my nose and mouth as needed when I get too warm.

Marathon is in one week. I should have a strong showing and should qualify for all the majors baring a catastrophe. I know at least one guy that’s going to be in this race that’s going to whip my arse. Dude has the talent for sure and is a low 4 minute miler and 15 min 5k, sub 117 for half all on 25-35 mpw. Can’t compete with that no matter how many miles I run, but I also shouldn’t be expecting to win my first marathon either.

Been really struggling with confidence lately even though I know the work I’ve put in, and only have been doing this for 2 years has reaped huge dividends. I’ve quickly become among the fastest in my age group regionally and am very thankful.

I know I’m at least another year off for a major breakthrough or plateau I just am running out of patience even though I shouldn’t be.

I know someone like me bitching about talent and being unsatisfied with my performance is petty, I just needed to vent. Also, this marathon training block can take a high hard one; so boring.

TLDR: Fast guy is sad because he isn’t as talented as others and wished he didn’t have to work so hard. Is being a babyback bitch.

Cheers.

Sounds like you are just tired of training. Been there. Training for marathons is by far the worst part, especially when you are trying to run them fast.

I’m sure you will kill it and want to run another as soon as you finish.

As an old, out of shape guy who never ran in his life until a couple of months ago, this is how I read just about every post in this thread. I’ll admit that this has been very humbling. Last 5K, a 12 yr old girl and her dad finished ahead of me.

Odd update to Hal Higdon Marathon Training -->

Finished 15 mile long run today stronger and more steady than expected. Made some minor nutrition errors and other issues but I'm happy with progress and pace but here is my issue ...

Post run , I've been hit with more self doubt then I've had yet..sat down and almost swore to myself 11.2 more miles is impossible so I should just throw in the towel. I won't, but it was just a weird and unexpected thought after a good run. I guess this is where the mental challenge & fight begins.

McVick,

Thanks & it was the the weirdest thing ...felt like running 17 on Saturday would be impossible so forget all of it and why try. No idea why, must have been tired from the run haha. The crash @ 13-14 got in my head.

Like you said , stick to plan and not overthink it. Getting out of my head will get me to my next breakthrough.
