I’m 60 and gotta start getting some cardio. I’m active just not in good enough shape. Tell me about Fitbit. Are they worth the money?
Posted on 7/10/26 at 6:11 pm to lsushelly
Yes
I started with a Fitbit and lost 42 lbs.
Need to know how many calories coming in and how many calories are going out. Fitbit is great for calories going out

All wearables are pretty terrible at this

Something is better than nothing. Even a cheap Amazon pedometer for step tracking.
It helps creates goals and the ability to improve steps over time.

Its fine for tracking steps and whatnot
What are you wanting to do to get back in shape?

That’s what I’m basically looking for. Something to help motivate me and set goals. Something that will challenge me

I have a Whoop and love it

Can't comment on the value of Fitbit. I use the Google Fit app, it's free and gives me what I need.

I have a Garmin and want to switch to Whoop but two main drawbacks:
1. Subscription model
2. No real time feedback on HR
But I would love to be able to wear my Rolex again.

Don't get bound in by device choices. Get what you can afford, or you'll spend months thinking and not doing.
You just need something to keep you honest on what you're doing, vs. what you think you're doing. There's a realtor in my gym, who posts every day about being in the gym, and consistently does 90% less work than the tortas in the gym, but spends 2 hours doing less work than the ladies do in 45m.

Start slow and don’t overdo. You take much longer to recover now.
But personally I would emphasis strength training over long cardio sessions.
Do some push up/squats/toe touches/sit up circuits for 10–15min followed by 60 min of walking at slightly faster than normal pace.
If you start running after 30 years of not, you’ll have plantar fasciitis and a pulled hamstring by Tuesday.

I would suggest looking into a lower level Garmin over a FitBit.
Something like a Garmin Forerunner 55 is going to be a much better option / value IMO

False narrative
Running after (or before 30) is no different than weight training, hyrox, crossfit, etc. With gradual progressions, proper form, consistency, recovery balanced with proper hydration, electrolyte replacement and a balanced diet, there is no reason most people cannot pick up running over 30 without injuries.

I have a Fitbit Inspire 3. Does what I need. Never discount walking. Get your steps in. My goal is 10K per day. I’m 65

Agree with this. But I also agree for anyone over 40 strength training, which can be as simple as 10lb dumbbells, should be more like 2/3 of your training with cardio approx 1/3. At age 60 you’re losing muscle everyday and the muscle will help you as you age so that you can move better.

Yes, there is a point in life where we cannot add muscle and what we have at that point needs to last us the rest of their life but research has started to prove that a higher V02 max is tied more directly to a longer and healthier life than muscle mass.
I think both are definitely important and for myself, I usually heavily prioritize cardio in the summer, fall and early winter and then once the time changes and it gets colder (and closer to ski season) more prioritize strength training.

Have a shake for breakfast a shake for lunch and a sensible dinner and watch the pounds melt off.

Pretty sure you can’t define “terrible”

When AU wanted to get more cardio I merely started walking and kept track of how long I walked and the distance. I used my iPhone Walkmeter app. I then got an Apple Watch and it does it all for me. Start walking slow and increase as you start to feel better. Be consistent and eat less sugar and fatty stuff. That’s the simple plan. You can google better diets and just keep walking.
