I nodded off (yes, exactly what happened) while riding last week. I woke up, saw that I was about to go off the road, over corrected and flipped over. All I got was some bruises, scrapes, and a minor concussion. The bike is warped out of triathlon commission. It might be salvageable as a riding bike though.

Helmet marks

Right after the accident

New bike. $1600 frick up.

Glad you didn’t completely wipe out and break some limbs. Looks bad enough though!

Glad you're still vertical. I was t-boned by a car when I was 20. I didn't have a helmet on and got lucky. I've never gotten on a bike without one since then.

Yeah, biking is dangerous as shite. Glad you're OK. The risk/reward is just not there for me. Basically everyone I know who rides a lot has been in at least one horrific accident.

I was with some relatives in Denmark a few years ago and everyone rides bikes everywhere (not a lot of helmets either). I asked almost jokingly - "have you been in any crushing accidents?" and the were like, oh yeah, all the time.

I've got two instances that will have me always wearing a helmet.

First was in a triathlon. I was going extremely slow about to dismount the bike. There was a turn, then about 50 ft. to the dismount line. I was focusing on the line and totally missed the wet/slimy area in the road. Back tire slipped out and I hit the concrete before I realized what was happening. Head slapped the concrete and I had a mild concussion. I was maybe going 7-8 mph. It doesn't take fast riding to create a scenario for a head injury.

Other time was a group ride on my road bike. After reviewing my GPS, we were going 25 mph. I was on the wheel of the rider in front of me and never saw whatever it was that threw me off balance. Think it was a small rock. Thank the lord I was able to hit grass off the shoulder. It was so fast there was nothing I could do. No injuries to me, and luckily just straightening out handle bars and derailleurs. But it could have been BAAAAAADDDDDD and it's not something you can predict or completely prevent even if you are a great rider.

I was going to say this. You might want to see a doctor just to make sure everything is ok

Props to all of y’all that consistently ride. I know too many people that have been seriously injured from taking a tumble full speed or getting hit by a car to ever get into that sport. It’s usually never the rider either it’s usually people texting and not paying attention. I don’t trust the cars on the road enough.

I don't ride anymore and a lot of it is due to this. Some because I became a lazy fat sack of shite . But even when I did still ride, it became 90% on the trainer and only on the road during actual events.

Glad you're ok, but what's the story here? I've never dozed off while biking, it seems impossible. Are you having a medical issue?

That poor bike!

My sister was big into biking.A few months ago she was riding through a neighborhood after work.
A large golden doodle charged her out of a yard and knocked her off her bike. She broke her collarbone and hip,had to have surgery on both.

A passerby called an ambulance, next day policeman came to take a report but had no interest in trying to find owner of dog.

I'm an avid mountain biker. My son (as some know) rides at an extremely high level. He rides crazy jumps (60+ feet) and drops and insanely steep terrain.

I've never been more nervous than when his mom and I were out of town and he and a friend went on a "gravel" ride where they ended up having to ride on a road for quite a way (albeit, it's a road that cyclists around here ride often, it's still a country highway). I was constantly checking Life360 and trying to plan an alternate route for him. I hate road riding and there is no way I'd do it on a regular basis as a hobby. Props to those of you who love it... but distracted drivers just make it too dangerous these days.

I’ve clocked thousands of miles and I’m still trying to understand how you fell asleep riding a bike.

Glad it wasn’t worse.

I don’t know how else to explain it. It’s was just like I nodded off on the couch watching Benson. alajones2 didn’t believe it either until she googled it. Apparently, it’s a real thing.

So the curiosity gets me. What prevents this from happening while you’re driving a car/truck?

This is why I avoid riding the road at all costs. I pretty exclusively mountain bike and when I do ride on the road use whatever local paths I can to avoid roads as much as possible. Eating shite on a mountain bike in to the dirt at 20mph can rough you up but I’d take that over getting hit by a car any day. Just takes one idiot not paying attention to kill you.
