And how old are you?

I bought a pull-up bar this week and have started doing them for the first time in years. I'm at 6 chin-ups and 3 pull-ups right now. I'm 41. I know that's probably on the low end for this board but, again, just getting started.

Just curious what the average range is and what I should be aspiring to.

eta- 5'8", 145 lbs

I am 28, weighing 205 and I can bang out about 15 pull ups. It’s not my best exercise, but I’m getting better.

I (39, 5’10” 190) can do around 10 on a good day. 8 or 9 years ago, when I did p90x for a while, I could do up to 25. If you want to get better at pull-ups and pushups, doing the p90x chest and back workout a couple of times a week is a great way to do it.

I'll check it out.

What kind of progression should I be striving for? Adding a rep a week seems reasonable to me but just guess work. I placed the bar in a spot that I pass multiple times a day and am probably doing 5 sets of pull-ups and 5 sets of chin-ups a day (in addition to push-ups).

I can do 12 dead hang pull ups unbroken and then those last 3 get kinda iffy to make 15

I have the Rogue Jammer bar above the door in my bedroom and do this every night before bed

My goal is to get to 30 unbroken dead hang pull ups

Soon to be 56. When I started GS in April at 5 11 185, I could barely do one. Closing in on 10 at 165. May have to up the goal soon...but honestly I have other fish to fry...like dead lifting 300 and squatting 275 and benching my weight and...don’t want to talk about overhead press.

Yeah, I don't do that much weight training. Well, any really. Mostly just pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, squats, and running. I try to fit in long hikes with a ruck when I can.

Strange enough weights is the only thing that has gotten our weight to go down. It has really made a difference in the way we look. We also have a treadmill and indoor bike we use regularly. But like you we love the outdoors and hike as well as mountain bike. We live in the country and have trails on our farm but we are also blessed to have great state parks nearby. Btw, my pullups went up because of a story told by lsu777 on here...

28, most recent benchmark is 2x5; 1x17 on chin-ups so I’m thinking with just warmups and not the two sets of 5 I could maybe hit 19-20. Pull-ups probably around 15

Don't get me wrong, I plan on incorporating weights at some point in the future. It's a process. Basically rebuilding my body after an incident a few years ago put me in a wheelchair. I've only got back to running in the past year.

You asked about progression. I am by no means an expert.

Start by doing max reps a few times every day. Once you can 5 or 6. Start doing sets of 4. Once you can do 4-5 sets of 4. Start doing sets of 5 or 6. At this point you should be able to do 10+ unbroken. Around now you can start to add weight. Either a vest, dip belt, or just a dumbbell between your feet.

I’m 28 5’ 9” 175lbs and can do about 12. I don’t train them that much but as an accessory on pressing days.

I do a heavy chin up day, a high rep day, a tempo day, and a paused day.

Every month I mix up my grips.

46yrs old, 5’6 178lbs.

25 or so. I do 3x15 with 2 minutes rest when I work my back and it doesn’t get difficult until the last set.

I am crap at pull-ups. When I was in grade school, the coach would make us run a 440 lap for every pull up less than 5 you couldn't do. I ended up running track and CC for LSU.

20 at least never tested a full max set.

I do weighted Pullups in the rep range from 4-10.

Pullups are different than other lifts, I don’t work my way up. I simply get loose enough to go for the max weight set first.

Typical workout will be like 55x6-8, 45x6-8, 35x6-8.
