Gym: Wipe the machine down before or after use?

So where I'm from, you clean up after yourself. So gym etiquette would fall in line with wiping after you sweat and felt all over it. However, the new (diverse) city I live is the opposite. You wipe before you use to make sure that you use a clean machine and not rely upon others to do their part.
I understand this, clean it to make sure you don't get someone else's germs. How do you know if someone else did what they were supposed to do? Like inspecting safety equipment before you use it.
So should we all just clean before we use? Why, why not?

Unless you have a reasonable expectation of everyone participating in good faith, then the best course of action is to take precaution.

My gym has signs instructing users to do both. Seems like that's the thing to do.

You're relying on people to be clean?
Lol

I've always heard the saying "clean up after yourself".
I'd rather clean my own sweat than the person that was there before me. If everyone did their part the system would work.

Wipe down after and the next person shouldn't have to. But that's probably having too much faith in humanity.

If everyone did their part then communism would work, but people are shitty.

Why wipe?
After your personal trainer is done the maid comes in while the masseuse rubs you down

How about wiping it down beforehand to ensure you dont have to rely on someone else... and .... wiping it down after use to feel like you are a decent human being.

Most people in the gym I go to are fairly considerate. But I do notice a high correlation of poor etiquette and non Americans. So I usually do both

Nothing gets me feeling all political quite like a thread about wiping down gym equipment.

Can you define what you think cleaning is? Do you mean wipe the sweat off? If so, that not consistent with
Yes, I believe you should wipe your sweat off the machines....But what about the bars? That guy previous to you, took a few deep breaths to get ready for his last all out set, wiped the sweat off his face real quick before grabbing the bar and gutting out the set. Probably no actual fluid left on the bar when he moves on, but guess what...

When you wipe the equipment down, you should let out a yell or grunt. This way everyone knows you're wiping down the equipment.

I usually just sit on the end of the bench shooting the shite and pissing the meatheads off. I rarely sweat.
