But why were you benching in the squat rack?
If you are at a public gym, the squat racks are for squatting. There are only a few of them usually.
If you lift, you know what your 1RM is and you should work at a percentage under that. Doing an AMRAP does not mean leaving the damn bar on your chest. If you are trying to bench to failure for some dumb reason, then get a spot from someone.
Squat racks are sacred valuable real-estate
Now, how about that map you owe us, so we can judge our outrage.

Your asking him to draw a map reminds me of that dude on the OT who drew out this elaborate map of a gas station and burger king to show us a guy cutting him off
But it does sound like he was benching in the squat rack

I think you did right.
Reminds me of the setup in my gym. There’s usually only two of us early in the morning. If he walked right in front of me instead of going around it would piss me off.

I didn’t realize how fragile some people are. Is it really that big a deal that someone walks near you? Now, if I’m mid rep and someone nudges my weight, then yeah we have a problem. That’s a safety issue.

In this case, it seems like the guy goes out of his way unnecessarily pass in front of the OP. It's kinda like when there's a wall full of 10 empty urinals, and that 1 guy has to use the one right next to you!
I used to have a "gymesis" at my old gym. No matter what day or what muscle group I was training, he always seemed to need the same machine, station, or weights that I was using. I would even test him by switching to muscle groups that I wasn't training ( for example, I train back and triceps together EVERY TIME, so I'd switch it up and do a set of curls just to see if he would follow, and he did- every time!!). He always seemed to be purposely following me and occupying whatever I needed to use.
So I don't think the OP is the a-hole. I think the weird guy that inserts himself in the OP's personal space without needing to is the a-hole, much like my old gymesis.

I will jump into a squat rack to flat bar bench when I want to really work on my pause before I start going up. I usually set the catch bars to the point where the bar hits right at chest level. Plus it is by default a spotter since if you fail you can just drop it and you aren’t totally pinned even though you better be able to do some creative maneuvering to get upright. The squatters can suck it and wait. The only lifters that don’t get a hall pass in the rack are the fricktards doing curls.

Yes. You’re the a-hole.

How can you retards honestly act like you don't bench in one of these? That's the only place to do a barbell bench at my gym. I'm beginning to think y'all don't really go to the gym.

OP: “Am I the a-hole?”
Consensus: “Yes you are the a-hole given the facts you outlined”
OP: “Wow you people have an IQ below the average person and clearly don’t exercise”
Did I sum things up about right?

I won't accept a consensus about the gym from people who act like benching in a squat rack is strange.

Well my gym has better racks than that cage but agree. It is where I squat (obviously), dead, and barbell bench.
And your poor thread is going off the rails now.

If your gym doesn’t have regular benches, nothing wrong with using the squat rack. If you’re working on a specific variation that requires spotter arms, nothing wrong with using the squat rack. If the other benches are going to be in use and you can’t work in, nothing wrong with using the squat rack.
That said, I always use a regular bench.
Also, if dude is walking inappropriately close to you while you’re in a set, that’s not cool.

I notice that some new gym guys just don’t have spatial awareness and they may reach across someone or get in the way of someone who has established a position. Some just don't pay attention.

I bench in a squat rack all the time, got a home gym
When I go to 24 hour fitness (have membership), I do not. Why? Because it is not needed. There is always that one guy there that will drag the one bench not bolted to the floor to the squat rack, so he can bench whatever to failure and think he is strong. Then he will leave said bench in the squat rack, because his body hurts
Now where is the damn map you owe us!!!

You should make that lame joke about the map again. Maybe it’ll eventually become funny.
