Looking to start strength training, but not sure I have time (honestly a little intimidated as well) to use a gym membership with a new born. Are there at home strength programs that don’t require full sets of weights? Current exercise routine consists of running and riding our peloton.

what do you have? there are plenty of calisthenic only routines, DB only routines, basic barbell routines, gymnastic rings routines. let us know what equipment you have.

Bro, just accept that the dad bod is inbound!

Pushups. Use a backpack with weights in it to progress. Decline pushups to hit upper chest.

Buy used DBs on FB marketplace. Make some room in your garage. You can get an adjustable bench on Amazon for under $100.

Pullups.

Again and again, I’ll chime in and say that you can accomplish a ton with a sandbag.

This program only requires an adjustable bench and dumbbells, I will have completed 3 of their programs by this Friday and they are 100% legit asskickers.

I bit the bullet on the Core Fitness adjustable dumbbells and use them with Peloton strength classes - love it so far.

I don’t have much of anything, but I guess I can add some dumbbells to my small collection, get a pull up bar and collapsible weight bench. I also didn’t think about using the peloton weight training classes.

I got a set of PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells off of craigslist (70lbs each hand for $500). See them all the time on craigslist and FB Marketplace and most can go up higher (90lbs+) depending on which ones you get

Also, you'll be tired with the newborn but you can definitely sneak in 30 minutes and not feel super guilty. Your wife is going to want time to herself, too

replying to myself, but when I was unsure if I wanted to invest in a home gym I just got a couple of kettlebells and did some workouts with those. KB swings, goblet squats, snatches, curls, tricep extensions. Can do a lot with 2-4 KBs and it's not a big investment

Thanks for the suggestions. As for the baby, this is number 3 so I know the routine.

i will say this, if you got the following, you would be set

a set of gymnastic rings- $33 on amazon

make a 50lbs sandbag- buy 50lbs bag of sand from lowes and wrap the frick out of it with duck tape- $15 or buy a strongman off amazon

kettlebells- 35lbs and 53lbs- $150

for under $200 you can have everything you would need to not only stay in shape but to get in shape.

from there add a weighted vest, more KBs and real strongman sandbags.

then DBs

then a bench

then cage/barbell etc

but for under $200 you can get a shitload done. the greyskull conditioning books are full of these. get a jump rope too.

A new born is when I started.
You can do it. All about balance.
Gyms are easier, cheaper and better for keeping you in a routine.

**I see this is baby number 3. Yeah, maybe home gym

No lie...you can sneak some curls in with the baby carrier if you don't mind looking goofy doing it.

Also, pushups, air squats, lunges, squat jumps, burpees, etc can be done for free. Pullup bar for less than $30. A nice set of resistance bands can be bought in the $30-$50 range.

You can add dumbbells and Kettlebells from FB marketplace if you check it daily.

Also, if you get creative, you can probably find heavy things around the house to carry around.

I started with just using apps.

There is one specifically for push-ups, another for pull ups, squats, ab workouts. I did them at different times of the day. It gets you comfortable and used to doing them.

Also tons of great routines on YouTube. The guy Chris Heria does almost all calisthenics. But can be overwhelming. He makes it look too easy..

Dip bars. You can do almost anything with them. Resistance bands. Sky is the limit

bunch of rookies in here

btw guys it gets busier, espeically if they are into sports...example i have 3 boys(6,10,11) and my routine was this yesterday

get middle kid to my wife at her wrok across town for baseball

pick up middle kid on way home from pre-football game meal at another players house

go home, get him and youngest dressed

drop off oldest at the football field

drop off youngest at baseball field across town

back to football game to video for the team

wife picked up younger 2

all of this between 4 and got home from football around 930. yea it sucked and i even had my MIL to get them from school.

Home gym is the only solution as they get older if they are into multiple sports plus they see you and think lifting and exercise is normal

tonight we have an easy night...only 2 football practices and film session for oldest right after school :banghead:
