Most people that I know from gaming will gasp when I told them I thought BOTW was boring.

It was too much of a grind... and that's coming from someone who enjoys the grinding of an assassins creed game.

I like the traditional dungeon set up and getting a new piece of equipment every dungeon.

I also wasn't a fan of the art style and hated the "steam punk" feel.

I wasn't a fan of cooking and crafting stuff either. I don't like that you have to grind for so long to get the master sword and then it has to "charge up"???? WTF is that. And I Gotta sneak into the castle to get the Hylian Shield to have a decent shield?

I like the idea of the interchangeable armors but event that can be a bit meh.

Also.... The story was one of the weakest Zelda stories.

We are about to sell our house and move so I treated myself to a Switch that will be waiting for me when we get down to Tampa. Purchased BotW along with it and will give it another good go because I'm really itching for some Zelda and crossing my fingers the rumors about Twilight Princess coming to Switch come true.

I'll say this too. I think people make a good point when they say the game was a good game but not a good Zelda game.

I felt like they took a concept and then said "hey lets make the main character Link and make it into a Zelda game"

If you call this game something like "Beasts of the Lost Divinity" or something corny like that and completely separate it from the Zelda Mythos, I don't think I'd have a problem at all.

I was just let down because it wasn't the Zelda I learned to love.

Open World Games can be a good thing. I feel like everyone is trying too hard to be too open world. Zelda was already open world with a streamlined story. I don't need you to say "think GTA or RDR but with Zelda"

Gardoki would always maintain that BotW was the best experience he's had in video games when it comes to exploring the world. Yes, that's not your typical Zelda formula, but for a fan of Bethesda and Ubisoft games, this should click with me.

Honestly, I need to get past the weapon degradation mechanic. As much as it sucks, I need to push through.

I'm wondering how the future of Zelda games will be. I loved BOTW, but I would like to get back to constant weapons, dungeons, etc. that has been a staple of Zelda. I wonder if there is no returning to it. I would assume that BOTW 2, at least, will have the same system

Fenyx rising was said to be a Zelda BoTW type but I loved it.

I love BOTW but Fenyx Rising is a better BOTW than BOTW is, incredible game.

No. Fallout:Hyrule doesn't get better. I put it down after the first 30 minute fetch quest where I broke all my weapons.

So, how do you know that it doesn't get better? Also, I understand the argument against the weapon system, but it is only an issue very early in the game. Eventually, you have to start getting rid of weapons because you have too many.

Also, I wasn't a big fan of cooking, but eventually your armor replaces most of the needs for cooking. The only time I cooked after the midpoint of the game was just to cook a bunch of prime meat for boss battles.

This is all true. I do remember sneaking to the castle to get armor and the weapons. I have not played it in years. It is easy to gripe about it but it was an exciting game.

If you're not into it I don't think it will get better for you. Not every game is for everyone. I enjoyed it. But there was a time like I felt like if I didn't finish it I would be content because I didn't have a reason to see anything more.

the most Zelda thing about this game was the building of the little village.

I find its actually a super relaxing game. I can sit back and relax and dick around for one hour and not stress over much. Not saying that as a positive or negative just something about it.

While it can be frustrating at times i actually dont hate the weapon damage. Makes you really consider using certain weapons and is it "worth" using said weapon for certain battle.

Also cooking to me is such a chore. If i have 70 Apples i should be able to convert all 70 of them into 14 Skewered fruits or whatever they make without doing them 5 at a time with a stupid arse animation between them.

I’m an avid Zelda fan and have tried to do this to no avail. It’s one of the worst mechanics I’ve endured and just can’t get passed it.

There's nothing relaxing about strolling down a path, walking into a big "empty" building and all of a sudden finding yourself face to face with a fricking orange haired Lynel

Super frustrating. I had times when I wandered across an enemy I was underpowered to face, tried to fight him because I couldn’t easily escape, and broke all my weapons and died over and over again until I figured out how to run away. The weapons degradation combined with the relatively small inventory that you start with was so frustrating.

However, this did not ruin the game for me. I absolutely loved exploring the world and climbing the towers. While a few puzzles in the temples and sacred beasts really frustrated me (especially that lightening beast), I managed to plow through and got an immense level of satisfaction and accomplishment from finding creative ways to solve obstacles.

It’s one of the few big games like that which I have actually completed the story mode.

I loved the game, but I definitely get the hatred over the weapon degradation system. The first time I played it, I avoided combat for a LONG time, and just tried to stealth my way to the top of each tower, searching for as many korok seeds along the way. By the time I started taking fighting seriously, I had already upgraded my weapon stash enough so that I wasn't constantly without a weapon.

On the second playthrough, to get past the annoyance of constantly breaking weapons, I learned how to spoof amiibos, and picked up the fierce deity armor set as soon as I could. The triple attack bonus from the full set helped alleviate the weapon problem. Same for when I got BotW for the Switch, when I started in Master Mode, my first real goals were finding as many korok seeds as possible and stealthing my way to picking up the Phantom Armor that came with the DLC.

Looking back, I think the one thing that kept me going to begin with was the fact that it was a Zelda game. If this game wasn't a Zelda game, I probably wouldn't have taken the time to try to play it all the way through. But I'm glad I stuck with it because it does get infinitely better the further along you get in the game.

Agree I committed feels like 200hrs into it. If it wasn’t a Zelda game, I would have certainly lost interest and quit very early on like OP claims.

—I went a week or more without a map. I thought I was supposed to find actual maps and didn’t realize climbing towers revealed the map . I had stupidly given up on towers at first after getting eviscerated a dozen times by the guardians around central field tower.

—The entire map was absolutely incredible but almost too exhaustingly massive despite being able to teleport between shrines. That was my major goal was to see and explore and reveal the entire map and beat all of the shrines along with completing side tasks that came along.

—Weapon degradation was just too much and happened way too frequently to be ‘enjoyable’. Hated that aspect throughout and the charging master sword was a big disappointment. Cooking was also too much of a chore that didn’t add to the game for me.

—Divine beasts and Ganon battles were probably my least favorite part about the actual gameplay. For me the game was much more about improving and full discovery of the world itself.

—I spent 2 whole days on that mystery island that was its own shrine. I had no idea how to tackle the quest at first and would come so damn close on several occasions only to have to start over. I didn’t read help guides so I had to figure it all out on my own. Very rewarding feeling to finally complete it.

Also I never defeated a Lynel ever. I got massacred several times, and then avoided or snuck past them for remainder of the game

TLDR - loved the game and experience but it’s massive and takes commitment
