LINK

That's without the controller, with the controller you're looking at $1128 for the base 512 GB model

AI processing demand has completely broken the market.

$1,428 for a 2TB version with a controller is steep for something less powerful than a PS5. They just picked a shite time to do all of this. It's a shame, because it's an awesome concept.

They flopped a decade ago. I really don't see what made them want to try again. This new Steam Machine will most assuredly flop.

Just make a new, more powerful Steamdeck.

As someone who doesn’t know anything about Steam, why would anyone buy this over a XBOX or PlayStation?

There is no reason whatsoever

I disagree.

Steam machine is perfect for me. I can plug it into my TV. I can bring it to any table in my house and set a TV up. I can take it easily when I travel.

I don't care about having ridiculous graphics capabilities, I just want to have access to my steam library in a very simple and portable device. I'll use a laptop for any actual computer stuff I need to do.

ETA: now there is a ceiling on how much I'll pay for a relatively underpowered device, and $1400 is near the limit on what I'd pay for a really good gaming pc, so I may just be priced out of the Steam machine. I need an upgrade though, my rig is old.

Access to Steam and other PC storefronts while being able to connect effortlessly to a TV. If you have library of Steam games or just like to have access to PC gaming but want console like interface I could see the appeal.

The price isn't as bad as I was expecting but the performance leaves a lot to be desired. This is gonna bomb. Really bad timing with component pricing. Think this had a chance at $749, but not $1049

I had made my own about 2 years ago with a Minisforum UM890 Pro barebones chassis, 2TB SSD, 32GB of RAM, and 8BitDo wireless Xbox controller. Loaded Bazzite SteamOS on it.

Not one single issue in those 2 years, and it's absolutely perfect for couch gaming. Came out much cheaper than what they're asking, but that was before the mad dash for RAM and such

Yea but this is Valve so it wont bomb in the sense that there will be warehouses full of unsold units. The best guesses I've heard is they are only manufacturing like 15000-20000 units in the initial batch and its priced to not lose money. I'd really like something like this ...but not this....maybe the next iteration....hopefully there will be one.

Sounds like you should get a Steam Deck.

The most optimistic outlook is sometime in 2028-2029.

I love steam and I think Valve makes good products, but this is DOA.
