Hard to imagine this competing with the next XBox console that will play console + PC games and be comparable in price.

Sounds like you should get a Steam Deck.

If I wanted a handheld.

I don't want a handheld.

Except the xbox will charge you $23/month to play those PC games.

There is no cost to simply hook up your XBox to the internet. If you're purchasing your games outright, it's a 1:1 comparison.

The cheapest Game Pass tier is $10/month and what is probably the best tier for people new to XBox who want console and PC games is $15/month. If you're PC only the best tier possible is $14/month.

It's just a lot weaker, and I'm not interested in a controller. I want a mouse and keyboard.

Not on current XBoxes.

Seems the next console is supposed to be a fully functioning PC though so I would think that should be possible. It's supposed to function with Steam and is rumored to do so, but I don't think that's been made official yet. Sony definitely made the decision not to release first party games on PC in response to the XBox Helix though so I'd say that's a good leading indicator.

That said, you can get a current XBox Series X, and two years of Game Pass, for cheaper than this Steam machine with no controller.

People don’t hate the steam machine, they hate the price/value.

For the performance and storage you get on top of not getting a controller, that price should not be over $1k. Steam OS is now actually possible to install on regular desktop hardware, so it is feasible to assemble your own and get way more performance for a similar or cheaper price.

But you won't have hardware support from Valve.

I don't like the price either, but I don't want to deal with PC problems anymore. I just don't have the tech savvy.

Meh, it'll fall short on every game that isn't heavily cpu limited. It will fall well short on games that require the 9.5 gb vram. This should've been 700 with a controller.

Wait, so what is the deal with the Steam Machine?

Taking that price into consideration, what differentiates it from a PC of similar price (other than aesthetics)?

It's too expensive and unknown for the traditional console crowd and way too underpowered and limited for the hardcore pc gaming audience

Completely pointless.

Will have 0 legs. They'll gradually sell a modest first production run and then you'll never hear anything about again.
