How is there not a massive open world Game of Thrones RPG

The IP really lends itself to an awesome game, I am shocked there’s not one already akin to the Witcher, Skyrim, etc where you can have elements of starting a house and rising the ranks etc but explore a ton too.

I actually disagree that it lends well to that type of video game respectfully. Before tale tale games imploded they took a crack at a GoT game in their style. The value of it is the characters in teh story as they are established. Create a character would not mesh well. I could maybe see it working if they did a type of game where you alternate between the true main protagonist for different story beats and chapters. John, Dany, Bran for the magical stuff. actually do dorne properly and maybe use the character of Arianne. Something like that. This would be extremely ambitious though.

Because no one cares anymore because Bran won

Just curious are you a book reader? Idk if he will ever finish them but it’s heavily implied or not outright shown Brans journey is immensely more dark there. Hell there’s a very very good chance he ate jojen at the end of book 5. It’s also likely the will “be the king” but it won’t be him. More the machinations of blood ravens 100 year long scheme
There’s also young griff who currently is waging war in the storm lands and it’s likely has already taken storms end. He will almost certainly take kings landing in book 6 and kill Cersei before Danny even gets to Westeros

I’ve asked this for years. Doesn’t make any sense

I think the concerns I read about were it would basically be Elder Scrolls but not likely to be as good. The next ES game is set to release in 2026.
Then the question is what studio would take on that project? Ubisoft might, but their open world games are hit or miss.

I’m pretty sure I started reading the series shortly before book 5 was released. I’ve now forgotten damned near all of it because it’s been so long. frick GRRM

I’m playing Kingdoms of Amular for the first time and it had me thinking about this very topic. They could set it hundreds of years before Aegons conquest and it would work perfectly

Yeah its pretty obvious he grew his story far too big and is having so much trouble bringing all the pieces together. Winds of winter is set to kick off with two MAJOR battles being Danny vs the slavers in Mereen, and the battle of ice with Stannis vs the Boltons and Freys. Theres so much complexity thought it makes the show look like a kids show. Davos was sent to Skagos by lord manderly to retrieve rickon in return for fealty to Stannis, Rob left a will days before the red wedding legitimizing jon snow as a stark and its currently in the neck with Howland Reed whose the checkofs gun of the whole thing..
Meanwhile Catelyn was brought back to life by Berrick as lady stoneheart and is set to hang podrick if Brienne doesnt lead Jamie to her which she currently is doing but no one believes she will let Jamie die.
The dorne plot is insanely complex. They want to make Marcella queen of the seven kingdoms, and Jon is currently "dead" but given the prologue of book 5 and all the dreams he has its certain he warged into ghost before dying
Then theres Euron who is set for a third major battle, the battle of blood. The sample chapter released about it and him preparing for what appears to be a mass killing to call a god of some sort is very very good.

I don’t think it would translate. Bet bet is to play Elden ring as Martin helped with it

ESO is probably about as close as you could get, especially with the Dragonhold expansion. The problem, as others have mentioned, is that the GOT world itself isn't nearly as special as the story and that story is very limited in scope of characters involved. You could do it as a single-player (as most players would want to be a part of the storyline), but not an MMO.
A GoT MMO would be about like a Spiderman MMO, but without being able to play any characters from the comics.

Make an open world RPG and just name it Westeros. Start as a Pikeman in the Lannister army or a sailor with the pirates from the Stepstones, or whatever in whichever various house. Then branch out on your own and become your own lord and fight for your own lands and eventually as another pursuer of the crown of the seven kingdoms. I could get on board with that.

This. I'd argue it's very much suited for an RPG especially with the build variety that would be available with the different houses having different forms of combat.

The only issue with that is it completely devalues the most valuable value part of the IP and that’s the very rich and layered story telling; political intrigue, and most importantly characters the audience is heavily invested in. Im sure it could be a fun romp as a sort of alternate history to the main cannon but it def won’t be everyone’s thing

Just play Elden Ring. Background story by George R R Martin. Not really like GoT, but still has his writing and charms. Best game of this generation easily.

As of April 2024, a new Game of Thrones MMO video game is in development, but it's not clear when it will be released. Redanian Intelligence says it could be 2025 or 2026, but it could take longer because game development can take a long time

Mount and blade has a fun game of thrones mod. Last I played it, they were constantly updating it

Lends itself better to being a Crusader Kings scenario.

not exactly the same but you can use the CK2 total conversion mod for asoiaf and play as a minor family and potentially work your way up.
