Looking to get the kids a gaming system for Christmas and need advice from the gurus here. I have 5 kids so the more players it is able to accommodate the better.

Go with the Switch. It also doubles as a mobile gaming device too.

Switch is good for the lower end of that age group. If you're talking about kids around 12-13, then I would go for an Xbox/PS4 and just monitor the games the child plays.

Either a Nintendo Switch or a Leap Pad. Both are about the same.

Nintendo Switch is co-op out of the box and has a quickly growing catalog. Xbox and PS hav e more stuff - probably PS just for sheer possibilities - but Switch is solid. PS or Switch imo, depends on interests and importance of catalog.

How many can play the switch at a time? I know the big drawback to that would be purchasing extra joycons or pro controllers. Pretty pricey.

Get a PS4.

Switch would be the 2nd option for kids that age but the only game that is a must for that age group is probably Mario.

Pretty sure Bomberman supports 8 on a single local console. LAN with Kart supports up to 12.

If you have multiple kids, 2 Switches is not a bad idea. 4 Controllers out of the box, two docks for multiple places to play, etc.

would you have to buy games twice? Say they wanted to play slatoon together either locally or thru the internet.

Bump because I have pretty much the same question as the OP.

OP:

Is Switch still the recommended answer?

I see I can get a PS4 Slim for cheaper than the Switch.

Also, for reference we have a Wii U already. When I look at the Switch versions of Mario and Mario Kart, I'm not exactly blown away in comparison to the Wii U versions.

Games appear to be more expensive in general for the Switch vs PS4.

TIA

Switch is the best console out right now no matter the age.

Not if you already own all the ports they've been releasing lately.

I'd say so, mainly for the Nintendo IP's.

Porting these over are a great idea since the Wii U didn't sell for shite, but if you already own them, I don't see an advantage to getting them again unless portability is a big factor.

The pricing for switch games is insanely dumb, but they can get away with it since they know people will pay for it again just to be able to play it on the go.

If the OP gets a PS4, he can get PS+ and get two free games a month and when his kids get older, PlayStation classics are 20 dollars

How much do the kids care about having the latest greatest games vs multiplayer stuff they can all get in on?

Frankly I would recommend an Xbox 360 with four controllers and a bunch of used games.
