Phil’s oyster bar was originally on government. They moved off of college in the 90s I believe.
From Phil’s Oyster Bar Site:

In 1945, Phil Tuminello and his family opened a seafood market on Government Street, which was then expanded into a full-service restaurant five years later.

Jed’s has been closed since August. Supposedly for “renovations,” but with a restaurant you never know if it will reopen.
Jed's posted on their FB today that they are hiring in anticipation of their reopening in a few weeks.

I find Jed’s disappointing. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s their bread or the breading on their seafood. I’m not sure why I don’t like them that much.

They just posted on social media today that they are opening back up in a few weeks.

I like Jed's. But my one complaint is sort of with the bread. I like the bread itself, but I hate the way they cut it. Instead of cutting it all the way through lengthwise and putting everything between the two pieces of bread, they cut it like a hot dog bun and cram everything in. It tastes the same, it's just hard to eat sometimes.
First world problem of the day.

That’s been one of my main complaints with Baton Rouge Poboys

brewbachers (drusilla) gets my vote for french dip. i hate when they make it into a sloppy mess with the meat falling out like Rocko's does. brewbachers makes it perfect, neatly stacked with a big bowl of gravy

Phil’s original location was Gobernment St. for like 40 years. Was off College for only a short time

Late to the thread but the grilled shrimp poyboy at Goodwood Grill is excellent.
It's not Cajun by any means... But it's stuffed with large shrimp and grilled. The bread is good for Baton Rouge poyboys..

Everyone in the restaurant seemed to order it on Friday.
George's regulars are very loyal to the daily special, and most of the time it's the smart move.
On Tuesday when they do pot roast, you can order it on a poboy instead and its very good.

I like Jed's a lot, but I don't find anything on their menu as good as their meatball poboy. It's delicious.
I think the new concept is supposed to be slightly different and more "sit down", so it should be interesting.

This board shits on Rocco's. Maybe he nailed someone's wife or something?
But, their roast beef poboy is one of my favorite meals in BR.

I don't know how anyone can possibly recommend Rocco's for a rb poboy. Their gravy comes straight from an industrial-size can.

The actual roast beef itself is just ok. But the gravy is flat out disgusting.
