re: What’s your favorite dish at a Chinese restaurant

IF we are talking pictures on the wall chinese:

General Tso's extra spicy
combo fried rice
egg roll
steamed dumplings

Asian hair pie

pepper twins chicken

Mongolian beef.

35 years ago we lived in Marion, Alabama. Our Walmart was in Selma (if you can imagine driving 28 miles to Selma, Alabama to go to the Walmart). There was a Chinese restaurant on Highway 80 in Selma that had the best Lemon Chicken I have had across all of my life, before Alabama and since. A few years back we passed through Selma on our way to Auburn and I planned the entire way from Clinton to Selma to stop for Lemon Chicken. The place was no longer there. Sigh....

Twenty years before that, there was a place in Jackson called Ding How. The owner (Ms. Nancy) had the very best General Tso's chicken. She is long gone too. Nancy always smiled when I came in. At that time, I probably ate her Chinese food for work lunch three or four days a week. I guess I was a regular.

Before that was Rainbow Pork at A place in Richland Hills, TX, and before that Spicy Pork at Five Happiness in Jackson. They had the best cook, but he killed one of the waiters during a kitchen fight one day. I assume the Chinese food at Parchman improved 100 fold.

My favorites are long gone also

Lemon Chicken. - Chinese inn Airline

Mongolian Grill – Donmoor and Florida - The grill made by that man that was always mad at the world.

House Special Lo Mein. - Eggroll King – Metairie on Veterans - Best house special Lo Mein about 25 years ago. Still there but stopped about a couple years ago and it was not good.

Best Eggrolls Ever - China Express on Coursey – Changed hands and not the same. They had 2 sheets of plywood and would put cabbage in sack between plywood and drive a car wheel on it to I guess press the water out. They did this behind the restaurant.

Shrimp Toast. - Place on corner of North Boulevard and Foster.

So I guess now it is Jalapeno chicken.

Pork mei fun
Dan dan noodles
Black pepper shrimp/squid/chicken
lo mein
mu shu beef

If they can make a decent lo mein, usually the other stuff is decent. I do prefer Thai though.

Just discovered this on the internet recently, and none of the Chinese restaurants in my area serve it, so I looked up a youtube video of a Chinese American woman making this, and followed her recipe.. It was gooooooood. Lots of flavor. I just wish a damn restaurant here would serve it.


Also, to answer OP question, Mongolian beef...but it can be downright terrible at some places.

If anything, I'd say peppered beef with lots of sliced jalapenos cooked in, good vegetable egg rolls covered with spicy mustard, or General Tso's.

If I have an addiction in my life, it would be that big flashing sign that says CHINA BUFFET
