What do you think of mandatory tip/"service fee"?

Today I went to a place on Magazine Street. Signs everywhere about the mandatory 22pct service charge and how it goes to help the poor restaurant workers that don't get a fair salary.
My BS alert was beeping and flashing, and sure enough... 45 minutes to get two plates of food at lunch. Only two tables in the restaurant. Literally as many customers as employees. That mandatory tip was code for "you're not going to like this experience and there is nothing you can do about it".
Now call me crazy, but couldn't they just pay their workers more? And recruit some better workers as a convenient byproduct? Instead of some ridiculous ponzi scheme where there is a lot of extra math?

That's exactly how they do it. Passing the cost to the customer.
It is no different than them jacking up the prices by 22% and not having a fee. You're just someone who would prefer it be less transparent and it be included in the price of goods. I get it. I have the same opinion and would prefer they just jack up the whole menu by 22%, but at the end of the day it's the same thing.
A business has never and will never eat the cost of increasing wages.

Assuming I am thinking of the same place, I’ve always had good service there so maybe just a bad night. I appreciate how upfront they are about the fee too and don’t hide it in the bill, not everywhere is like that.

Just asking… If I get a mandatory tip on my bill for a table of 2 and the service is poor. Do I have the right to put a negative number in the tip section to decrease the tip for total? I am not saying I would do this but, I am just curious.

It's easier for the restaurant to add a service charge than to raise menu prices every week. Think about it. Energy prices are rapidly increasing, which increases food prices (and everything else). Our favorite restaurants will soon be out of business. Thank Brandon for this. Part of the surcharge goes to server and kitchen staff. Part is for the increased cost of food.

I understand everyone is just trying to make it out there, but after paying $61 for 6 fish tacos and fries at a local place last Friday, we are done eating out for awhile.

I saw this in a restaurant yesterday where i was picking up food for Lunch. They charged a 10% pick up fee, WTF. However i usually give them 2 dollars or something small as a tip. But since they felt the need to just add it in my bill i didnt tip at all. So they actually ended up with a dollar less than they would have made.

Whats even worse is when they add the mandatory tip - and then you read the small print on the menu that [b]"a 4% additional charge will be added to your total if you pay by credit card". [/b]

in an upscale restaurant well good service is known, im ok with it. mid-level with a very large group im ok.

Even before the recent inflation the price some places were charging for tacos were nuts. A specialty taco over $3.50, maybe $4 if it’s an expensive protein, and I’m out. There’s some amazing authentic places that you can get stuffed carne asada or carnitas for sub $3.

Our dining out budget is a fraction of what it was pre-Covid. It has boosted our savings tremendously, and we honestly are accustomed to not eating out as much. I doubt we ever go back to spending like we did previously again.

It's an obvious attempt to deal with the people who never tip, no matter the quality of service or food. They look for any reason they can come up with tio get comped.
It used to be only put on groups 12 or over, now I have seen it applied to groups over 4. This nullifies any control the diner has over the level of service. We pay for the cheap bastards who would not even consider tipping. Sometimes they are easy to pick out, sometimes not.

Mandatory tip usually saves me money. If the restaurant wants to make that decision for me, fine, but that is the amount of tip I will give. It may not work out how they think it will for the wait staff.
