Which one do you think is better/more reliable for internet everyman type reviews and why?

Yelp.
I don't know anyone who uses Urbanspoon.

I guess it probably varies for each region, but I prefer Urbanspoon here in Tampa. Most of the reviews are from good everyday "foodie" types and are not overloaded with pretentious bullshite from some frick thats watched two episodes of Iron Chef and has now decided he's a culinary expert.

I think they both suck. I read some of the dumbest crap on there.
If I was to pick one it would probably be Urbanspoon. I don't know why.

I almost never trust internet reviews, people who tend to write them are usually idiots it seems. When I look around a (perfectly normal) place at the tables that look like they're miserable I think of internet reviewers. You wanted to put a bullet through your head before you ever sat down for dinner, no wonder your steak tastes bad.

I tend to check all 3 (yelp, urbanspoon, tripadvisor) if it is for a nice dinner

I look at Urbanspoon first but I usually like to read the reviews and you can usually tell by the negative reviews which ones are legit

I trust this internet review.

I like Urbanspoon (at least for this area) over Yelp. I find there are more reviews per restaurant so the consensus is more likely to be an accurate sampling of customers experiences. Plus the reviews that are there seem to be more recent. I have also found some good reviews on opentable.com too. On the other hand Yelp is good for much more than just restaurant reviews.

Yelp.
More knowledgeable and foodie types tend to use Yelp over Urbanspoon, plus the format Yelp has both on their site and their app is A LOT easier to use.

As someone kind of alluded to earlier, I feel that sometimes presents a mixed bag, wherein you will get these folks trying way to hard to prove their "foodie" cred, when as often as not, they don't really know what the hell they're talking about and just talking out their asses.
I find both can be useful, but you need the ability to take a lot of the reviews on each with a healthy grain of salt. Usually, it seems, the folks with some sort of ulterior ax to grind are quite easy to pick out on both.

I hear what you're saying. I've read many reviews on Yelp from regular folks as well. It's very easy to spot the pretentious know-it-all's. They usually have 200+ "friends" and tons of pictures of both themselves and of food.

I use them both but take with a grain of salt. Edna from Iowa is sure Mother's was the best lunch in the world at her last Nola convention visit. I also use Chowhound.com and Opentable reviews to balance it all out.

i wrote a few reviews on yelp, and wish i hadnt. some of the people are toolbags. Flooding me with messages about writing more reviews and other dumb shite

My go-to is Yelp, but I tend to look at both when traveling. It really depends on the city as to which is more useful. I always take the reviews with a grain of salt, but when you see positives or negatives repeated through multiple posts, it can help paint a picture. Overall I find the random food pictures and menu pics most helpful.
When I travel and try places, I try to return the favor by posting a review on both sites. If there are no menus to be found online (often the case for smaller ethnic restaurants) I try to take a to-go menu and post it online.

Urbanspoon by far in new Orleans. Too many morons on yelp.
