Muffuletta, Central Grocery, New Orleans

Tried them at least 3 different times and they were never good. Just dry and tasteless. On top of that, the service always sucks and the owners are major assholes.

Definitely a tourist thing nowadays.

IMO, Lovecchio's in Norco has the best muffuletta I've ever had.

Friend,

The recipe for a Central Grocery muffuletta hasn’t changed in decades. It’s as good today as it was the day I ran there to buy a replacement jar of olive mix before father got home, and in the process ruined my volleyball career with a broken ankle on a Dumaine sidewalk.

I’ve never had anything but the kindest of service there. One of the workers, the one with tattoos on each of his fingers, is my favorite. He has jet black hair and sometimes, if memory serves me correctly, it is in a ponytail. He may seem tough on the outside, but I have had nothing but impeccable service from him.

While tourists flock there to try America’s best sandwich, there are plenty of locals who are regulars. I include myself in that crowd. It is the sandwich against which all sandwiches are measured.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

I was about to add the same - a good Cuban is hard to beat, and Philly CheeseSteak when made correctly is incredible.

Like everyone else, I've had some great muffalettas and some average ones.

I used to think that ithad to be served cold until I had the one from Cochon Butcher. A warm muffaletta with a cold beer is quite nice.

Buddy, those look like some mighty fine sandwiches, but that bread to filler ratio is all off on your #1 pick. It should be an honorable mention at best with all those carbs.

Truthfully,

Portillo’s isn’t deserving of a mention. I like Italian beef and I’ve had them from several places in Chicago and north shore area of Chicago. Portillo’s isn’t even the top of the Italian beef sandwich.
As much as I like Italian Beef,I’ve had at least 2 roast beef po boys here in New Orleans and one on the north shore at a place called Bear’s.

The popeye’s chicken is a joke I hope. I’ve had other’s At non chain restaurants that have it beat and frankly I think MCDonalds and chick filA are better.

Yours fondly
Dale
