My all-time favorite fast food burger has and always will be a Double Whopper with cheese, PLAIN, with bacon.
Probably the most-unhealthiest thing in the world, but it tastes so good and you are always full afterwards.
I ‘maybe’ get one 3 or 4 times a year, but never regret it.

1970's - McDonalds (QPwC)
1980's - Burger King/Wendy's (Whopper, Double)
1990's - Jack in the Box (Ultimate Cheeseburger)
2000's - Whataburger (Whataburger)
2010's - Sonic (Good old #1)
Of all times? Gotta go with the old school Whopper. Wendy's is a close second.

I'm with you through the 2000s, though I had a few ultimate cheeseburgers in the early 2000s. I have never had a Sonic burger.
How much was the angry whopper? That was good. Does anyone else think Hardee's is good stuff or is it just me? I eat a fast food burger about once a year these days so I can't claim to have up to date info.

When it's fresh it's hard to compete with a classic Wendy's doublestack

The Big N'Tasty, affectionately known as 'The Big Nasty'. The Big Bacon Classic is a close second.
Wild Mountain Bacon Cheese Burger had a cult-like following for several years, even though the chicken sandwich was much better.
My current favorite is the Baconator, add Lettuce, tomato & pickle, but I don't think it qualifies for this discussion as it's over $6.

Looks like the Whopper is kind of in the lead here (but Whopper of old).
The only thing I don’t like about BK burgers, the patties have a slight metallic taste (I’m guessing from flame broiling). I think the Whopper has always been the best dressed burger.

Sonic is only in 44 states, so by your parameters, is it a National chain? Change your parameters to read “a large chain”.
I never set a parameter for what is a national chain. I just asked if you consider Whataburger is a national chain. With Sonic being in 46 states (I checked) and 3500+ restaurants, I would most definitely consider it a national chain, plus it’s been around for what, 70 years?
Edit-
69 years (1953)

The "Big O" from Fast Track. I make my own rules.

If it was a national chain, a FT burger would win hands down. I will give it the best fast food burger ever made in the BR area.

Krystal of old was also amazing. It has gone to complete shite unless you are drunk of course.
