A little discussion can help people think outside their norm and consider new food safety practices.
I appreciate the info that I shouldnt be eating with my hands after playing with my dirty money

There was a young guy who got elected to the Louisiana State Legislator some time back. Carencro area district.
Seemingly all the first session he served in, he’d feel the need when he spoke in committee or on the House floor to mention he had a masters in architecture from Tulane. Got pretty old for some of his colleagues.
He lasted one term and was defeated the next election cycle.
Don’t know what my point is or how this contributes to the food safety discussion, but your comment made me think of that guy.

Look I hate germs too and think people are disgusting, but you’ll drive yourself crazy if you think about stuff like this. Exposure to germs helps build a robust immune system

the food is still safe, so not a food safety issue. The smart consumer (like you) can simply wipe down the container when returning home.
also the cashiers are not handling raw food, thus any contaminants will the same as those you just picked up yourself by handling your groceries to get them to the checkout line in the first place

The cashiers are possibly contaminating the inside of an empty food container that then has food put in the container. The food touches the inside of the container.
When you touch the outside of container 1 and then stack container 2 on top, the inside of container 2 is now touching the outside of container 1. As mentioned, it’s probably not a big deal, but under a food safety program, you now cannot guarantee the container is contaminate free.
You don’t have to handle raw food to get bacteria that can be found in raw food. Bacteria live in soils, water, on surfaces, etc. they don’t just live in raw food. The bacteria has to be introduced to the raw food to begin with.

but I know a grocery store manager will not.
I had to get certified regularly as a manager with grocery departments. Food safety was HUGE but the people that would write us up over the tiniest shite would tell us that "ya'll really are doing a good job and are cleaner than most restaurants but your company makes us write you up for SOMETHING every time we come"
We would then get chewed out for said write up... yeah I left that industry.
Anyway, no register ANYWHERE is getting cleaned like a proper food prep surface. I have never seen a sanitizer sprayed on a register counter and let air dry. The task of putting a sticker on a container can be done quickly in the deli, this just seems like a bad manager trying to find a problem to fix his solution.

Exactly my thoughts as well.

I would agree with you here. They should not be doing this. My pet peeve is a cashier handing me a drink cup while working a register and sticking their fingers on the inside of the cup to pick it up. I hand it back and tell them I want a clean cup.

You’re such a count.

You should super glue your hands to the conveyor to bring awareness to this issue

Your correct sir, and if this location was to get a visit from their internal food safety audit team, or local health inspection, this would be a violation not a critical, but still a food safety violation.

Food safety nerds are harmful for evolution.

Grem-a-phobes are second only to fkn liberals. They never think things thru. cashiers and stockers are touching everything any damn way, So are the unseen suppliers, loaders, workers in the respected field that dressed the food and prepped it. Jesus shut up and eat or starve and save us all the misery

Seems like you never think things through.
Cashiers and Stockers are touching PACKAGED food with the exception of produce. The cashier isn’t putting his or her fingers in your chicken salad when you buy it.
The unseen suppliers, loaders, and workers, when handling unpackaged food, are supposed to abide by food safety sanitation standard operating procedures. Of course, they do not all the time but you don’t expect to see them doing this in the open like a cashier.
Even though I know they may, I wouldn’t expect to see a chef handling food improperly improperly when in the open.
The fact is, a grocery store manager should not allow a practice like this to happen, especially in plain view of customers.

I’m still going to buy the chicken salad anytime I’m near there.

This makes me want to try their chicken salad.
