Surprised at a food safety issue I saw at a grocery store

Stopped by a local BR grocer the other day. Noticed in between customers checking out, they had their cashier putting the famous chicken salad stickers onto the plastic quart containers they are sold in. You know, you buy a plastic container of chicken salad and there’s a label/sticker on it with the grocery store name.
At first I thought what a great way to have your employees work. When they aren’t checking someone out, have them fulfilling needed tasks. After all, they sell a ton of chicken salad weekly, so they have many containers that need stickers.
But then I realized the issue. The plastic containers are sealed from the supplier and the supplier guarantees they are ready for food contact (sanitized to put food in them). Now, you have cashiers, who are not washing their hands, handling these food contact containers at their cash registers using the register counter which isn’t sanitized and ready for food.
So the cashier takes my money, handles cash and coins, and then goes back to putting his hands on the container. He touches the outside and then puts the inside of the next container on top of the outside of the previous container he just touched. So they are now, in food safety contexts, contaminated. And then they will put food in the container and sell it.
Now, as someone who works in food safety and food processing, I can tell you this is a HUGE issue for food safety and a TERRIBLE habit for this grocery store to do.
In reality, it’s no big deal and it’s not going to make me stop buying their products. And I’m not trying to make an issue out of this, and I’m not trying to complain. But I found it an interesting example of improper food safety at a grocery store and thought I would share it. The more proper food safety habits we know, the better off we all are.
You can say they would do the same thing in the deli with the deli workers, but in practice, the deli workers should be prepped to handle food and have clean surfaces and clean hands.

Was this a way to take a roundabout shot at Calvin’s or did you really think we were over waiting with baited breath for this second grade food safety lesson?

Aren’t they touching EVERYTHING you’re buying regardless?
I’m so confused with your gripe here.

You mean a couple days of training doesn't fix 18+ years of bad habits? Let me tell you about the restaurant business...

Touching packaged food is not the same as touching food contact packages before the food is packaged.
And as I said, yes the deli workers touch the food but they, in practice, can have their hands washed and their food contact surfaces clean.

The food board isn’t interested in discussing food safety issues?

Good thing you hurried home to post this on a message board instead of taking up your issue with the store manager. I'm sure he will read your post here anyway and change the unsafe practice you observed. This is exactly how you should handle these situations. Sure showed them...
Great job health inspector!

Just trying to discuss something with people on a food board, dude. A little discussion can help people think outside their norm and consider new food safety practices.
You, a culinary teacher, of all people should recognize unsafe food safety practices and encourage otherwise.

I recognize the unsafe practice and agree it should be stopped but, I also recognize when someone fails to act.
As someone who works in food safety and food processing, you know this is a HUGE issue for food safety and a TERRIBLE habit for this grocery store to do. So why not educate them instead of us?
Were you hoping the store clerk is a F&DB lurker who could sharpen his food safety protocols by reading your post?

Not interested in being a Karen and complaining to the manager of a grocery over this issue. The issue isn’t big enough for me to complain about. Yes, I see it as a HUGE issue in food safety context, but I know a grocery store manager will not.

No, I wanted to have a discussion on a board about food and I thought in doing so, maybe someone on this board could be enlightened to new safety practices. Or even better, someone brings positive discussion to the thread and I become enlightened to new safety practices.

Calvin is going to kick you right in the nuts.
Stop being such a pussy
Edit: I'm on fasting and cutting booze but I might have to go find him at his local watering hole and key him into this dumb shite. He is going to laugh like a hyena.

quote:What is the demographic of your target audience? I think all of the people on this board understand that handling currency and touching food product containers is a bad practice, and all will agree that it should not be done so, what is "new" about that safety practice? I ask because this is a discussion board and people are more knowledgeable than you are giving them credit for.

Thank you for letting me know, I am calling the proper authorities immediately. Which store is the offender?

I don't always read your posts, but when I do, you're always mentioning this.
