Almost seems like this doesn’t warrant its own thread but I couldn’t find anything in the search.

What do y’all serve as sides with your rice and gravy dishes for dinner?

Blackeyes or field peas, or purple hulls, or white beans. Green beans, sweet peas, okra, baby limas. Green salad. Corn.

For some reason, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus are reserved for non-rice meals.

My husband doctors up pork and beans or canned sweet potatoes to go with some rice and gravy meals. I do not.

Guess that partially explains the obesity rates there.

Bad joking aside, I'm being serious. I grew up in Louisiana, and had rice and gravy a lot. Loved it. But it always accompanied whatever meat we used for the gravy.

When I moved to Lafayette it took me a while to figure out what these people were taking about. Spend all day cooking a beautiful roast. What's for supper? Rice and gravy. No mention of the roast, which was by far the most important part of the meal. Want some smothered steak? Too bad. You're getting rice and gravy. Madness

Yes, rice and gravy always has meat. There is no such thing as rice and gravy without meat.

A roast (or hamburger steak is whatever) with the rice and gravy is the entree. The meat isn’t the entree. It’s all one entree.

Ever get a plate lunch? Do they put a hamburger steak in the big compartment of the styrofoam plate and then rice and gravy in the side? No, the meat, rice, and gravy is the entree and then you get 2 sides.
