So a hamburger steak with, say, mashed potatoes is called “hamburger steak with mashed potatoes”, but a hamburger steak with rice and gravy is called “rice and gravy”?

No. But you CAN refer to it as rice and gravy.

A lot of places.
Name one. There isn’t a place. You can get stews other places, you can get mashed potatoes and gravy, but you will not see rice and gravy anywhere else. It doesn’t exist. Show me a menu or recipe from outside Louisiana with “rice and gravy”

Y’all are saying :

“Everyplace has cake with icing. Therefore everywhere has king cake”

“Everywhere has liquid with seafood. Everywhere has gumbo”

Slow cooking a roast while letting it make a roux from drippings and flour, and serving that over a heaping of rice isn’t done other places. Sorry.

Green beans... but they need bacon/ham or sausage and a potato in them.

Here’s a link describing upstate South Carolina as “the rice and gravy belt”.

quote:

It’s a region where the term “meat-and-three” rarely needs translation, and when rice and gravy and macaroni and cheese are listed among the vegetables of the day, folks understand.

You really can’t seriously think that rice and gravy is solely a Louisiana thing. That’s really weird.

Oh, you googled. One of those is just a picture of white rice. Can you read?

What a stupid hill to die on. Crispy chicken, eh? I hope for your sake that you’re just trolling. Please.

Unfortunately, Mingo, I’m still working, and will be for the weekend, so wondering how someone can be so clueless about rice and gravy is about as good as it’s going to get for me for the next couple of days.

All I can say is my job and life is much better than wondering how someone can be so clueless about rice and gravy.

Yes, with zero gravy.

Show me the South Carolina rice and gravy that you speak of. Can’t wait for the recipe.

Sides for rice & gravy

I like natchitoches red beans me. Not the New Orleans slop, but a more soupy beany bean goes great as a side dish to my rice & gravy.

Its because it is an entree. There is no such thing as a “side of rice and gravy”

If the rice and gravy has some type of protein in it, then and only then could it be considered a main dish, if not, rice and gravy is a side dish. Simple white rice with gravy isn’t and never will be an entree.
