You don't say.

A roast (or hamburger steak is whatever) with the rice and gravy is the entree. The meat isn’t the entree. It’s all one entree.

Eh. Not really.

quote:

Ever get a plate lunch? Do they put a hamburger steak in the big compartment of the styrofoam plate and then rice and gravy in the side? No, the meat, rice, and gravy is the entree and then you get 2 sides.

Hamburger steak is not always served with rice and gravy though. It's a main, and it can be served with sides, such as green beans, mac and cheese, or . . . wait for it . . . RICE AND GRAVY.

Look, man. I love that this is near and dear to your heart and that you want to die on this hill. It's cute. Wrong, but cute.

Growing up it was always corn, especially with a pork gravy.

Nowadays when I'm cooking it, it can be pretty much any vegetable. This week we had a pork rice and gravy with grilled zucchini and squash. Sometimes we do asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, etc... Although I like canned vegetables, because that's what I grew up on, we try to stick to fresh.

Roast, rice and gravy, corn. The perfect combination.

Wasn't expecting such vitriol in a rice & gravy thread, but TD always surprises.

Thanks everyone, and yea I'm 100% a backward arse coonass that sometimes serves rice & gravy as an actual entree.

What do you call the meat then, and how is in not the entree?

My biggest issue with this phenomenon of calling the side dish the entree is that you never really know what the actual protein. That's the most important part of the whole meal. Are we having pork steaks, roast, deer meat or nutria rat? The diner can't tell because all the menu says is "rice and gravy".

Its because it is an entree. There is no such thing as a “side of rice and gravy”

The ONLY place in the world where it's not a side is South Louisiana. Surely you realize this.

Where else in the world are you being served "rice & gravy"?

Some dishes are served with white rice as a side, but that's not the same thing as "rice & gravy"

making a roast right now to eat a rice and gravy tonight.
Corn will be the side. I basically put it all in a gumbo bowl; the roast, rice and gravy, and the corn, with a nice role on to sop up everything at the end and literally clean the plate.

Are you under the impression that rice and gravy is solely a Louisiana thing?

I guess so. I love how a parochial view of the world can warp people's understanding of things.

The rest of the world just eats white rice. It took Louisianans to think of putting meat droppings on top of the rice.
