a 6-qt enamel, cast iron dutch oven is a great starter piece and all-around solid item for most meals serving 5-6 people. Here's a solid dutch oven that won't break the bank. . Le Crueset is the real deal, a bit pricey, but will last a lifetime if taken care of. You can find specials and savings several times per year and add piece by piece. My kids gave me a 9x12 Le Crueset lasagna/casserole dish 4-5 years ago and I use it often to cook a variety of meals

4 quart

I'd also recommend a 6 quart to complement

I have Lodge and Le Creuset cast iron enabled in multiple sizes.

I'd be hard pressed to tell you they cook any differently.

My recommendation is to get her 2 sizes. A 3-4qt and a 6-7qt. Depending on your budget, you should be able to accomplish that with both of those brands (or Staub).

Yep, and I caught the Lodge on sale at Amazon. Good pot.

You got it all in the first response. However, if you don't want to spend the $$$ on Le Creuset you can give Cajun Classic a shot. I have both and the Cajun Classic has held up for over 10 years with only a minor chip on the rim. If it's a special present go with the best if money is no option.

and for any LSU fan

Lodge is quality, affordable and made in the USA. I just wish they had a 3-4 gallon option like the imports.

Agree. I got my wife the LC 5.5 qt dutch oven, and later, got her the LC 5 qt braiser.

Lots of versatility with 2 pieces like that. She uses them 75% of the time, easily.

I got a 7.5 quart Lodge enameled Dutch oven for $55 from Target a few months back. It's a great piece of cookware.

Wow I wish this were the OT forum right now. We could get some mileage out of this one.

Anywhooo….

Start with an inexpensive cast iron one for ~$25 and if you like it move up to a nice Lodge, Le Creuset, or go bonkers and get a Staub. I have a few and love them.

We started with a 5.5 qt Le Creuset that I used almost every weekend. Then I got a 7.25 qt, and it is now the most used pot in the house. Love it.

What type do you want?

Lodge 9 quart pre-seasoned cast iron.
I use this for deep frying.
Amazon

Here's a 7 quart Viking enamel coated.
I use this for roasts and things like that.

Their bare cast iron is, but their enameled products are made in China.

Watch this short video. I trust America's Test Kitchen. They offer some interesting thoughts on various Dutch ovens. Such as rounded bottoms versus non-rounded and the importance of interior color.

They say non-rounded is better than rounded, you get more surface area. Light interior color is better than dark because you can see your food brown better.

Spoiler alert.

They chose Lecreuset but I think their best value option was Cuisinart.

I have both LC and Staub. I use both for different reasons. If you are going to get only 1 and cook for more than 3-4 people, my recommendation would be the LC 7 1/4" Qt pot. Its a great size and can do a lot of things.

I prefer the LC over all other brands because it is a little bit lighter. I have a 6 3/4" wide and lower height dutch oven that is awesome too. It is always on sale.

Rule of thumb is 1 qt per serving. Having said that I own both Cuisnart enameled and Staub enameled cast iron pots. The cuisinart have chipped and stained over the years and I have moved on to the Staub when replacing the cuisinart. Care and use are extremely important when utilizing enameled cast iron as metal spoons will do damage to the pots, especially if your wife like to tap the side of the bowl with the spoon after stirring what's in it. I highly recommend Staub, and do not have any Le Cruset to compare them to.

ETA: I especially like the Staub pot with the "nippled" top interior for braising and roasting, self basting feature.
