Preferred Rice

What is the F&D Boards preferred type of rice? I've always used Jasmine but yesterday I went to a dinner party and the host said they never serve jasmine with cajun food because it's too floral and sweet. I've never really been able to tell that much of a difference.

We use Parish Rice in our household. Higer in protein, low glycemic index, AND grown in Louisiana...

Started using this about a year ago and we really like it. It cooks up nice and fluffy.

I don’t use jasmine for Cajun dishes either. La white for most dishes or American jasmine when needed

Jasmine, and I make it with gumbo, sauce piquante, meatball stew...., to me it's the best.

I don't use jasmine with cajun/creole dishes. I like medium grain rice in gumbo only because thats how my mother and grandmother made it that way.

I generally use Cajun Country long grain or toro

I usually use Supreme low glycemic. I got curious just now and looked to see if it's grown in Louisiana. It is, but it's a different variety and has less protein and a higher glycemic index than Parish. Guess I'm switching to Parish.

I use a lot of Basmati Rice and will buy a 25 lb. bag of it a couple times a year from Costco.

I try to buy Louisiana rice. Doesn't make sense to me to buy rice shipped from the other side of the planet when there's perfectly good stuff grown right down the way by my neighbors. Usually long grain. Don't have a single brand I use exclusively. I'm currently working through a huge sack of Costco basmati because I was out of rice at the time and knew I was going to be cooking some before the next time I was going to go to a regular grocery. I like basmati well enough and it works just fine for south Louisiana dishes. I'll presumably go with another bag of LA rice next time I'm due to stock back up.
Jasmine rice does have a floral smell so I can see where it would make a difference for some. I've never found it a negative though. I don't use it all that often though. A while back I used some locally grown popcorn rice and liked that but it's been a long time since I've seen it.

good old mahatma is grown in Arkansas, California, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas. same as water maid (based on an abbeville strain) if you want medium grain. i use water maid for paella and mahatma for everything else

I used to use just plain rice, but have been using Jasmine in just about everything for years. I love Jasmine rice...the smell and taste are far superior and I have never felt that it clashed with any dish, including cajun.
