We stayed in the tenderloin and it was homeless and drug addict central
This is like complaining after staying in the 7th ward or Central City.

I ate at Sotto Mare some years ago and absolutely loved it. Off of Columbus.

I just talked to a guy from the Northshore, said the same thing about NOLA. True story.

Wife and I had a great time and a great meal at Ryoko Sushi Bar. Very cool atmosphere. The was a DJ spinning and lots of good looking people watching. One of my favorite experiences in San Fran.

Get ready for a little culture shock. If you're Caucasian, you'll be in the minority. Everything is stacked on top of each other. Great restaurants all over though.

Ryoko is one of the greatest places in San Fran that nobody talks about. Some of the best sushi you will ever eat & the atmosphere is amazing. We go there every time we visit.

If you like Bourbon and Bourbon based cocktails, make reservations at Bourbon and Branch Speakeasy.
Upside: Incredible 1920 style speakeasy located in an old Private Investigation firm building complete with a rotating fireplace that spins and moves you from the library into the dark speakeasy. Drinks are pricy but worth it. Always have had a great time.
Downside: It's in the Tenderloin, so make sure you don't skip leg days prior to your trip. You're gonna need the strength to jump over the passed out addicts, hypodermic syringes and piles of human excrement strewn about the sidewalks.

Well why the heck are you in San Francisco on a Thursday afternoon looking for the best restaurants to try and get into within the next hour or two?

Pretty wild move, but you can walk right into Brandy Ho's and the food is amazing. GOAT chicken wings.

Finding a good restaurant in San Francisco is not difficult, and just as someone else stated in this thread, it is a great food city. My wife and I always stayed in hotels within walking distance from our destination, be it a concert, play, symphony, opera, ballgame, shopping, etc. Unless the city has been overrun within the last four years, we never encountered crime, feces, and other nightmare scenarios mentioned. Many times, we used Priceline and similar apps, staying at five-star hotels for a hundred bucks.
While I can recommend Brandy Ho’s, Tadich Grill, and Flour + Water, many of our favorite evenings were spent in wonderful little Italian restaurants in the city. I was born and raised in the sticks of south Louisiana, and I never felt uncomfortable or fearful in SF, then again, like any metropolitan area, we stayed out of dicey areas at night or on foot. Just like you would in New Orleans, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, etc. Nothing like the cool night air in SF, sitting outside, drinking wine at an Italian Bistro. I miss my wife and those wonderful times.

I thought the bar scene sucked in the Bay Area personally
It's pretty sweet in San Francisco itself. Many cool places to eat and drink. Many awesome restaurants. The east and south bay are shite in comparison.
Hell, 4505 is the only good BBQ I've found yet here.
