My wife really wants to go or we would not be going. I’ve not had an urge to get back out there due to nature of the surrounding environment. It’s also why I’m so apprehensive about doing an AirBnB instead of a hotel. I have no clue what isn’t over run by the insanity.

As much as Fox news and the poli board would have you think, it isn't that bad. Where is your Airbnb?

Really, there are three neighborhoods that see quite a few [harmless] weirdos: Tenderloin, [parts] SoMa and [parts] Mission. Otherwise, it's not overly difficult to avoid those pockets. Quite a few hotels are in Tenderloin area, but you could stay in Nob Hill (Scarlet Huntington, Intercontiental, Fairmont, Ritz-Carlton, Stanford Court).

I've always enjoyed staying in Noe Valley when I do Airbnb, which isn't often.

We are currently looking on where to stay. We are meeting another couple, so I need at least 2 bedrooms. I mean worst case is we Uber/lyft where we need to be. But, I don’t want to deal with bs trying to grab a coffee in the morning if I want to and or late night grub.

Ultimately, I’m sure we could find an AirBnB for cheaper than a room, but sometimes a hotel is just convenient.... especially since we are getting in pretty early that morning. Need a place to stash luggage.

If you have access to a vehicle and want to drive out towards Palo Alto and the Stanford University area, check out Filoli, the house built by William Barrows Bourn II, the richest gold mining baron in the US. The grounds are spectacular.

Seconded. If you don't want to wait in the insane line, their sister restaurant B Star Bar takes reservations.

Hakkasan is absolutely gorgeous and I enjoyed it, but if you're doing Asian you should definitely do Mister Jiu's. They have been semi finalists at James Beard awards and they have a Michelin star.

I am in no rush to go back to SF either. That said, I absolutely love wine country and am already planning my 3rd trip there. I could skip SF on that trip altogether if I'm being honest.

Just a warning for your AirBnb - In SF, they're commonly a converted place down attached to the garage (which is under street level). They don't use A/C in many places in SF and since the windows opened to the garage instead of the outdoors, I had no air whatsoever. Miserable.

I enjoyed Sonoma, we stayed in bodega bay. Had a great time and had a great meal at Terrapin Creek.

Noted on the AirBnBs as well....

Scope the hotels on Nob Hill - I provided some names in an earlier post and that's a nice area of downtown.

If you do go an Airbnb route, hotels are, generally, OK with you stashing luggage, but will request that you tip the bellhop well. I haven't had much issue with this. I've also used Drop Bag to Us, which was a fine service. I think it's, literally, some dude's house in SOMA.

If you are into well-packed fudge, supposedly the Castro district has some establishments.

I liked the city but let's be real, some areas are complete shitholes and overrun by homeless people

We stayed in the tenderloin and it was homeless and drug addict central
