Too much poop in the water.

Oysters may not be safe to eat if harvested right now due to high levels of fecal coliform in the water.

It's interesting that the LDH has authority here. I guess it's in line with "Do not eat fish from this waterbody" requirements.

Another reason to increase the prices on those puny sacks they sell now when harvesting begins again.

I'm old as dirt to many of you folks and can remember when a 100 lb. sack containing 20-22 dozen oysters cost all of $10.

Now with the "Half Sacks" they sell with around 100 oysters in them costing $50 when tax is added, you're averaging $.50 an oyster and you still have to shuck them.

We were one of the last places in the country where you could get cheap oysters. Travel anywhere else and they are like $3 a pop. Sucks.

Screw that. In my experience, the work involved in shucking overwhelms the payoff of eating them. I love oysters, raw to fried and everything in between, but I’m not doing the work of shucking.

I love oysters, but I'll be damned if I'd pay much more than I'm currently having to pay.

For $3 a pop, I'm buying live crabs to boil or a few pounds of shrimp.

I'm odd in that I actually enjoy shucking them. I know I'm not the majority though. For whatever reason it's a satisfying process, and it's the same reason I enjoy eating pistachios from the shell

I too love to shuck my own oysters and learned how to do it when I was still 8 years old. My dad would get a sack and I'd be right there wanting to eat them as fast as he could open them, so he gave me an oyster knife and said I could eat all I could shuck. That was one hell of a learning curve for a kid and I got my share of cuts and pokes, but kept at it.

I get to keep the oyster "liquor" to use in gumbos and other dishes and the ones I shuck haven't been washed like the ones you get already shucked at stores.

Back when I was getting 100 lb. sacks, it would take me just over an hour to finish them off and that was 20-22 dozen oysters per sack.

This is sad news. Oysterman been taking on the chin on the east side of MS River the past couple years with freshwater inundation from spill way openings. Spill way remained closed this year and was looking to be a promising fall/winter then this news comes.

Hopefully, the state can get out and get some assessments some sooner rather than later. It's closed due to the potential for contamination, and I guess they need to run analysis on the water first before they clear a waterbody.

That water was fresh before the levees were made. Then, saltwater came in and oystermen started farming it. Now it's going back to what Mother Nature intended it to be and oystermen are pissed.

Yeah, seems crabs and shrimp would be affected too? Ordering steak for a while I guess.

I was in Slidell this past Saturday and stopped at a seafood store near my sister-in-laws house to pick up some boiled crabs and the guy that owns the place also does his own crabbing.

He told me he ran 1000 traps and only came back with 300 lbs. of crabs. I bought one of the last 2 dozen he had in the store that afternoon.

He said he was hoping things would be better within a few weeks since it almost wasn't worth it to go out to run the traps.

Oysters are filter feeders right? Is the point of stopping the harvest to let them filter the water or to make them safe for consumption? Didn't they reestablish like a billion oysters to clean up New York's harbor? They are eating those oystes...

Supply and demand, most other areas are close to major metropolitan areas like Seattle and DC. Plus, let’s not act like Lobster isn’t cheap in New England and Salmon in the Pacific Northwest.

I’m not that old and I remember getting a half bushel sack for $16.
