“Texas BBQ” way overrated….. The world has been cooking meats with “wood” since the caveman discovered fire! $30 for a pound of bland texas sausage? $35 for a pound of brisket using SPG cooked at 225 degrees with red oak cooked low and slow…..Wow….nothing new here? I’ve had brisket cooked exactly like so called “texas bbq” 60 years ago in a small town Louisiana bbq joint across the tracks that any “texas bbq” couldn’t hold a match against. I’d say that “Texas Monthly” expand their reach and take a trip to Lafayette on a Sunday when BBQ is served at local dives and see what BBQ is really like…it’s not just the meats that are awesome, but the sides are over the top!

What places in Lafayette do you have in mind?
Blanchards and Johnson's are good but not on that level

I think a little bit of both. Well maybe not fallen off but a bunch of newer places are doing a lot of creative stuff that can’t be found at Franklin. Vaughn is putting a lot of stock in other offerings beyond the big 3 of brisket, sausage and ribs. Franklin does those things well but doesn’t really stray beyond it.
Have the lines gotten any shorter at Franklins?

I’ve been to Franklins, Terry Blacks in Austin, Goldees and Leroy and Lewis when they were in their food truck.
To me Goldees was by far the best. Everything was done perfectly. Franklin’s was next followed by L&L and then Terry Blacks. All of those joints blow any other BBQ I’ve had from an restaurant out of the water though.

But while you're heading west, you might as well just keep on trucking to the Texas triangle, because “Lafayette cajun food” way overrated…..
I've been to Cajun restaurants here that would teach people from Lafayette what Cajun food is really like.

Burnt Bean is really damn good as is Truth, but I gotta question Redbird at 4. I’ve been twice and neither time did I think it was top tier. Not even close to some of the old standards.

Redbird is damn good. I eat there a bunch. When I lived in Addison I would eat Cattleack every other week. I like Redbird better.

Goldees gets a lot of hype. Basically every one of their employees seems to be branching off.
I never heard of leroys. I also never dealt with the line at frabklins. Terry Blacks is good enough for me.
Mullers in Taylor was the one my grandparents always brought us to though.

They just got a michelin star.
Also, if any of yall watch Chud's BBQ videos on YouTube, Bradley Robinson used to work at Leroy and Lewis.
