I've never been a mashed potatoes and gravy fan. If I'm having gravy, I prefer to have rice.
I like a good baked potato with butter, sour cream, green onions and, sometimes, bacon.

Depends on main dish. Steak - baked potato. Meat cooked in gravy - mashed.
I like them both.

The dish matters but don’t sleep on fries.

I preferred mashed since a baked potato can be a pain to eat, even though I will also eat the skin. Mashed also offers more options for eating. I can do without gravy, mix with veggies, and do skin on/off.

I enjoy both but would rank mashed with no gravy slightly higher than baked.

Mashed. I swear my mom baked potatoes 4 times a week because they were cheap. I got burnt out. I still eat them, but rarely order or cook them.
Twice baked potatoes are my favorite.

Neither - twice baked/stuffed for me.

In this case I say...
Why not both?

Baked is my safe pick. Pretty much always good unless undercooked.
Mashed potatoes w gravy has many variables on whether it’s a good dish. Sometimes it’s fantastic, but sometimes it’s trash.

Correct answer.

It can be a tough decision.. I think that the answer given that it depends on the meal is the correct one...
I know it was a dumb question.. But the buffet had the choice today. Mashed potatoes with gravy is comforting food, while the baked tater with B/sourcream can really be a tasty dish.

When I was a kid I hated mash potatoes, they made me gag whenever I was forced to eat them. Strange thing, I could eat the mashed potatoes in a Banquet TV dinner. But 60 years later, mashed potatoes are one of my favorites, especially with gravy. My wife won't eat mashed potatoes with anything other than butter. To each their own.
But I like almost any style potato: mashed, baked, scallop, au gratin, twice baked, fries, Brabant, etc...

I hated potatoes as a kid. To the point where my parents couldn't even shut me up with McDonalds fries, and when they tried to give me my first hash brown, I was like 4 years old calling out that it tasted like fries.
As I got older, I became more tolerant of potatoes, but still prefer them in a way that masks the starchy texture/flavor. Twice baked vs. plain baked. Seasoned fries with ketchup vs. plain potato-y fries. Even in "mashed", I like a soft-skinned mash with roasted garlic, butter, cheese, sour cream, etc. far more than a finely mashed russet type.
These days, we will even boil baby potatoes as a dinner side, but I prefer them tossed in a tangy mustard/vinegar type dressing over just plain boiled with salt.
