Late To The Game. Louie's at LSU selling?

My parents took to me to Louie's as a child all the time. In high school and later in college my friends and I had some great times going there for late night. I started bringing my own kids there about a decade ago. Meal quality was starting to be hit or miss around that time, depending on who was working but when Frenchie retired it really seemed to go down hill fast. I kept giving it a try every few months, then just a few times a year and it was just worse service, poorly prepared meals and more expensive it seems each time. At this point if it sold I'd be sad if it became something else, but if its being sold to someone that want to restore it to its former level of service...I welcome it.

It cost my daughter and me over $50 for breakfast. That's outrageous.

Our ticket was $42 for a waffle, side of bacon, Omelette, and 2 Cokes. Left the waiter a $10 tip.

Nothing will ever beat the old Louie's back when Louie ran it on Chimes Street. I cannot remember how many stools there were but it was not many. Louie cooked the best breakfasts and lunches. A smash burger with chopped onions, hand cut Cheddar cheese, pickles, mayo, and mustard. Fries were fresh cut just before going into the grease. The joint closed early afternoon.

Yep...no dinner or late night anymore. I havent ventured out past 2:00am to see if going out to eat after the bars close is still a thing young folks do in BR. We would always hit Louie's ,Waffle House, Dennys, or Russell's

While at LSU, my dad and I would meet up for breakfast every Saturday no matter what unless one of us was out of town.

he’d always come pick me up and make sure I had a good meal before the weekend. Didn’t matter if it I was at my place, a girls place, just getting home from a New Orleans last minute trip, we’d go eat. Sometimes we just sat in silence, other times we’d catch up on our week.

Fantastic memories. Hope the new owners continue decent enough food for others to make memories like that.

Good lord, some of the comments here sound like some people are just getting old. Anyone saying Louie's is just some average place or continually serves "poorly prepared meals" either didn't go there a lot in the past years ago or now. Depending on who was cooking and what time of day, the food could have it's ups or downs. Frenchie wasn't the only good cook, and it's not like he was there most of the time for a place open 24 hrs/7 days a week. I've eaten there since the 70's, and more than once a week while in school and after for quite a while. It was not and is not Cracker Barrel.

Yeah, the prices are a bit high now, but it is expensive as hell to run a single location local restaurant now. I wish they'd open for dinner again, but we still make it several times a year. The Big Lou, the Mitchell, loaded hashbrowns and pancakes were certainly a few notches above average every time. Sure there are things here and there I'd tweak, and the wait staff has always been quirky at times (especially after midnight), but I've rarely left unhappy in all the years and the place is an LSU institution.

Does anyone know more about the new ownership and what that means? It would be a shame to lose this place.

I think they’re definitely an above average diner. They have two problems, though: prices have gotten ridiculous, and they’re no longer 24 hours, but instead lunch/breakfast only. I cannot count the number of times I ate there after 10pm. I can count on one hand the number of times I ate there before 2:00pm. Guess how many times I have eaten there since they stopped being open late? Once. When they were competing with Waffle House, Akasha Express, Raisin Canes, and a couple late night drive thru fast foods, Louie’s was heads and shoulders above the competition as the obvious best place to eat. So much so, that it was worth a trip to go out of one’s way just to eat there. However, they just aren’t as great a value/competitor compared to all of the other options nearby at lunch.

Another thing that hurt them is the shuttering of the Varsity as a major mid-sized music venue for touring bands. A lot of my late night Louie’s visits were after concerts at The Varsity because it was only a short walk away. With no Varsity, I spend significantly less time late at night in that neighborhood (not that Louie’s is open late anyways).
