For years, I have often heard, read and seen on TV about Peter Luger's. I love a great steak. One of my favorites. And I've eaten at some pretty good steak houses before (Pappas, Bavette's, Ruth's, Fleming's, Bern's, Dickie Brennan's, Del Frisco's, Perry's, Shula's, Charlie's and Prime at Bellagio) to name a few.

I have an upcoming trip to NYC and have been kicking around the idea of going. Is it worth the dining experience? Is it better (subjective) than any of the places I listed above?

The only other place I have booked for a reservation is Il Mulino.

It was voted the best steakhouse in America. Just remember to bring cash, debit card or check.

I’ve been living up here for 2 years and most the locals say it’s past it’s prime. I haven’t gone for that reason

Part of me wants to go, because of its reputation and accolades it has received throughout the years.

But if there is another steakhouse that is better, I'm up for that. I realize at some point though, a steak can only be cooked so incredibly well.

Where else would you recommend?

I have to be honest, I don’t get going there.

I have no doubt it’s a great steakhouse, but when you’re in New York, a city where you can have unique dining experiences and foods that you could never get at home, why get a steak?

I’d much rather go to The River Cafe, Cosme, Le Coucou, Tori Shin, etc. than a steakhouse whenever I’m in NY.

Edit: that’s not to say you shouldn’t go. To each their own. That’s just my personal preference.

Not disagreeing with you -- at all.

Appreciate the recommendations. I'll look into these as well.

Of the ones I listed, I would easily recommend Le Coucou first, then River Cafe second. But they’re all fantastic. Each has a Michelin Star

I went to NYC for the first time in 2011. Made reservations at Luger's about a month in advance, all I could get was a table at 4:30 on a Sunday.

Rode the train out to Brooklyn, waited at the bar for about 30 mins or so for our table to become available. Had a great steak, and the sides were amazing. I'm not a big steak sauce guy but the way they prepare their steak goes great with their house sauce.

I would say go just for the experience. It is an old building in a predominately Orthodox Jewish area, there is a gruff old lady at the hostess stand, and the waiters are professionals. Based on the other steakhouses you mentioned, you seem like you would appreciate a good steak, and the old American steakhouse experience. I would carve out an afternoon to make the trip.

Absolutely.

I don't know if it's worth going there repeatedly. Maybe I'd equate going to Peter Luger's to going to one of the old line New Orleans restaurants. Once I've been to Antoine's or Arnaud's and had the experience, there are other more modern options in New Orleans that are probably more attractive than a repeat visit. Same thing with Luger's.

ETA: Oh, I almost forgot. Get that thick sizzling bacon appetizer.

I recently learned about Wolfgang’s from a Bobby Flay show. It was started by the former head waiter at Luger’s. The original Park Avenue location is in an old hotel and has really cool low slung arched ceilings by a famous architect. Similar vibe to Peter Luger but I think it has a little larger menu. Food for thought....

Be sure to call as soon as possible to make a reservation if you’re set on trying this place. Last time I was in NYC, my work party tried to get in and they were booked solid, 7 days/week, for 3 months.

It's a unique experience.

You order 'steak' for the number of people eating steak. And that's all you should do. They do the rest. The servers are kind of rude which gives it an interesting vibe.

Bacon for an appetizer is about three inches thick of amazingness, sliced onions are delicious.

Great steak. Unique experience. If you're into that sort of thing, certainly go.

I like Delmonico's in the financial district.

I ate a Peter Luger's once and the food was great, but I wasn't all that impressed with the service.

I've been to most of these as well and Peter Lugar is still the best steak I've had. It's phenomenal.

Do it just to check it off the list. Not sure I'd go the steakhouse route in NY myself, but if that's the plan, it's not like the differences between the best is significant, regardless of anecdotal personal preference.

It's a no frills old german beer hall vibe steakhouse. The steak is really good but honestly no better than any other top line steakhouse. The way they serve it is interesting, I guess.

I think its worth going to simply bc of the name/history but you will certainly have a better overall experience at a number of other steakhouses. Peter Luger's doesn't care what we think bc they are booked solid always but they could really use a drink menu overhaul and refresh on appetizers/sides.

I would tell you to go to 4 Charles Prime Rib before any other steakhouse in nyc.
