Nah, it's terribly overrated. Even the supposed "best" ones I've had, are little better than eating a slightly stale cinnamon roll.

I don't hate it, but it's not something I seek out. I like some of the less traditional ones more, that are more along the lines of doughnut or real "cake" texture.

I don't like the big cinnamon roll type. I like the french ones.

I like it, dont love it and now that I work from home... never really eat it.. was one of those things people always brought to the office...
Also, I couldnt tell you which one was better cause I never cared to look where it was from (though you can always tell the el cheapos who bought one at Breaux mart or something)... I just ate it...

I just eat a little when some vendor drops them off.

Not a big fan either. Haven't had a bite so far, this season.
I do like the Haydel's Cajun Kringle and I like Sucre's king cakes okay. I like the pastry almond french king cake Poupart's makes, but otherwise, I don't run for king cake. Even if it's around, it's easy for me to avoid.

The filled King Cakes are basically danishes and they do come in a bigger variety of flavors than danishes normally do, so people who like danishes probably look forward to King Cake season each year. But I think King Cakes are so popular because they're usually free for the people eating it. You don't buy a King Cake and eat it yourself, you bring it to the office or a party.

A danish is usually filled and flaky. The king cake is not. It's more of a braided cinnamon roll than anything.

A decent King Cake is typically a cinnamon brioche, the same dough used for a decent cinnamon roll. Danish dough is laminated like a croissant dough and a completely different beast.

I was just thinking of outing myself on this issue this morning. Living up in Yankee land, I absolutely love that I have family members in Lousiana that send me a king cake each mardi gras season. It reminds me of home and I am very grateful. However, I'm good for two small pieces at the most. I just don't care for it too much.
