I support everything here.

I'd support a Flying Saucer here. I don't think it would dethrone Avenue Pub as my favorite spot, but I would add it to my rotation for sure.

I can't agree with that. Polly works her arse off to get beers that most people can't/won't get. They keep their lines clean and do a good job of rotating good beer in. I don't care how many taps you claim to have, it is all about quality and knowledge of your bar staff when it comes to being a great beer bar.

Yep.

That being said. It think it could do well downtown. There isn't really a good beer bar in that area.

I've been to FS in Fort Worth and Austin. It is definitely a quality establishment.

You must have awful taste in both women and food if you think either of those things at the FS on Main are good.

I certainly wouldn't mind a FS in the Quarter because places to watch a sporting event are very lacking. I usually find myself at Ryan's, but they don't have an overly impressive beer selection.

When in Houston, I'll often go to the FS more than anywhere else after a ballgame at the Juice Box.

I've also checked out the one in Little Rock, but it's been a while. Last time I was there they had some quality cigars that you could enjoy indoors at the bar. How times have changed.

Admittedly, I'm a Beer Knurd.

Depends on the location.

Edit: but it would never dethrone the pub.

Flying Saucer is like my favorite place in the world.

It would do great in NOLA. Any time i am in Ft Worth or Houston it is one of the first places i go.

My complaints about the Avenue Pub:

-Cleanliness
-The Smell...it has a distinct stench to it.
-The atmosphere is lacking.
-The beer selection is great, I would just prefer if they would push more American craft beers. She gets every Swedish, Danish, Italian, etc beer in the world, but cannot track down some great American craft beers. Not that I'm knocking her. She works hard and kick arse, I'd just like to see different beers rotating.

The really stepped it up with their food/burgers.

Agreed - aesthetically speaking AP is lacking.

Most Flying Saucers I've been are clean, open, and have that "beer hall" feel. I'd be fine with having one in NOLA, but it would probably end up being a tourist hotspot.

A taco Mac in Nola would wipe the floor with anything already established there.

Avenue Pub draws such a diverse crowd. You'll have a substantial service industry crowd from the restaurants near by, guys that look homeless or rapists, grungy looking people, hipsters, ugly women, and the likes. I just always feel grimy when I leave there.

What parts of the place are dirty?

I've never picked up anything unpleasant.

Disagree. What is it missing?

Did you miss ACBW?

Or go to the grand tasting? She had a fantastic selection of new and aged American craft beers.

What beers do you think she should be getting?

I'd imagine it has to do with the way domestic distributors and importers are set up. She can probably get the European beers through an importer easier than she can talk an American brewery into going through the hassle of distributing somehwere they normally don't. That's purely a guess on my part.

I've never felt like that at all.
I love the funky vibe. Love the artwork on the stairs headed up stairs. The upstairs balcony is one of my favorite places to drink the city.

Hell, I even enjoy the somewhat boring back patio.

The smell is cigarette smoke. Can't stand that. Don't know how a world class craft beer bar can allow smoking to get in the way of the aroma and flavor of these great beers. Sure, upstairs is non-smoking, but you can't go there all the time. Make the whole damn place non-smoking. The beer nerds are still gonna come.

I agree on that the selection is tilted towards these obscure European sours. That's what Polly likes to drink and it's great that she works so hard to get them. But I can only drink so much of that before I need some hops. Yes, she's limited by what is available for distribution in Louisiana, but she should be able to get one off kegs from Stone, Sierra Nevada and the like that no one else in the state can get. I'd like to see more of that kind of stuff.

I just feel like if she can pull in some of the outlandish, obscured European beers, then maybe (I don't know if she can or not) she could pull in some Dogfish Head, Founders, Bells, Alaskan Brew Co, Maine Beer Company, Saugatuck and so on every so often. I'm not knocking it. I love the selection and trying beers I've never heard of (most of the times I cannot even pronounce ).

How many places do you go that have better beer selections than the Bulldog or FS?

Taps on Washington Ave has a really good selection and a patio both in front and out back. Though the crowd can get douchey but that's due to being on Washington. FS has A LOT of the Texas beers. I feel like outside of the major craft players, they under represent beers outside of Texas.

What Stone/Sierra releases has she not had on tap?
Outside of the Stone RIS and Old Guardian odd year releases I feel like Avenue has had almost everything else that has come to LA on tap.

I think she was one of only two places I know of that had Hoptimum on tap when it was released in May.
