Is it even legal for her to serve beers that aren't officially distributed here?

Bump. I sent FS an email and got this response:

know it would be great. If you have any ideas or a broker that would send us opportunities when they come up I will always look. Thanks!

Anyone have a contact I could email him back?

Hey Z, did anything ever come of this? My biggest regret about moving to Nola is the lack of a FS. I go usually 2x or more a week here in Raleigh.

Lease opportunities? I can give some referrals.

The question is -- what part of town? CBD/WD, Uptown, Lakeview, or Metairie?

Point is, why would you miss something when nola has a better option?

I'd probably do fine if you put it in the CBD or Magazine Street.

Probably very well...interestingly, I loved the one in downtown Houston despite the fact the food wasn't that great and the service was horrible. Of course, that was my one and only time.

The food in Houston must be different from the one in Raleigh because the food at the one here is awesome

CBD or Metaire, I wouldn't put it uptown or GD, the people there are very anti-chain. I'm shocked Houston's and Melting Pot do well.

Damn good choice. Have to follow the money and people. And I guess someone has to do something make the suburbs slightly less soul crushing.

I just feel like if she can pull in some of the outlandish, obscured European beers, then maybe (I don't know if she can or not) she could pull in some Dogfish Head, Founders, Bells, Alaskan Brew Co, Maine Beer Company, Saugatuck and so on every so often. I'm not knocking it. I love the selection and trying beers I've never heard of (most of the times I cannot even pronounce ).
Since no one really addressed this, let me explain. In short form (before I get too tl;dr), it's not that Polly is choosing to get obscure European beers and ignore obscure American beers, it's that she is legally hindered in what she can or cannot sell at the bar based on what is legal for distribution in the state.

Polly is able to get some of the obscure European items that she does because certain distributors have the rights to them. They can bring over limited quantities of these items in addition to their wine and/or liquor orders to fill out the (physical) space in their order. Beer makes much, much smaller profit margins than wine and liquor, generally speaking, so distributors are not always willing to bring larger quantities over, even if they know that they would sell. Avenue Pub has proven that they are going to move that product, so the distributors are willing to work with them to an extent.

American craft distribution of Dogfish Head, Founders, Bells, Russian River, Three Floyds, Great Lakes, and on and on are limited because of the limitations of those breweries to produce enough capacity to extend their distribution. The breweries do not always want to expand, and those that do do not always have the capacity to do so. Dogfish Head does not want to distribute in Louisiana. Three Floyds does not want to distribute outside of their niche, nor does Great Lakes. Avery, Green Flash, Stone, Founders, Bells, Southern Tier, Ballast Point, Russian River, etc. may or may not want to distribute in Louisiana. Some of them eventually have, and more may do so in the future, but some of them do not. It is not legal for a bar to sell beer in a state where it is not licensed for distribution (and I know that there are small-quantity exceptions and whatnot in some states in certain circumstances, but that's not the point of discussion here).

An example is Troegs and their Nugget Nectar (as well as other products)... they were brought into the state by a distributor who had the rights to distribute their beer, but Troegs did not want to distribute to this state. Even though the distributor sold almost all of the beer, the brewery pulled the plug on the distribution in Louisiana. (The details of this weren't made explicitly clear, but the gist was that the distributor had the right to distribute, but possibly not in Louisiana, and Troegs brewery did not want to distribute to Louisiana, so no more Troegs in Louisiana.)
