I thought this was amusing:

quote:

"A Tampa treasure!" the menu proclaims. The Cuban, it continues, started as a snack for cigar workers in the 1890s. "The sandwiches underwent changes as immigrants from different countries came to Ybor City.... The Spanish brought the fine ham, the Sicilians the Genoa salami, the Cubans the mojo-marinated roast pork, the Germans and Jews the Swiss cheese, pickle and mustard."

City pork makes a good cuban. Always get that when I am in the mood.

I'll go ahead and downvote myself for mentioning City Pork on here.

I agree. That must have been a late Tampa innovation.

Personally, I put a mixture of butter and mustard on both top and bottom. Otherwise, that's how I make them at home.

It would definitely contain tomatoes.

I could see the City of Gonzales mandating the official jambalaya.

I wonder what the prison sentence for an improperly prepared Cuban sandwich is. I sure do like them, regardless. I make them a little differently, so I guess I need to stay out of Tampa.

I like to chop up the pork when I do it myself. I find it makes it a bit easier to eat.

Manolito in New Orleans makes my favorite one outside of Miami. I haven't been since LaToya locked it all down. I really hope they survived.

I've neversde my own. City Pork used to have a solid one but I haven't had it awhile. Carribean Joe's is really good too.

Genoa salami is a Tampa thing. One of the food tv shows had an episode about the Miami-Tampa Cuban Sandwich rivalry several months ago. The addition of the salami was the main difference. Both cities claim the sandwich originated there.

Want a great Cuban sandwich? Go to a Cuban deli in Hialeah.
