home delivery meal kits

i have never tried any before. i do know i would rather prepare the meal myself than have something already precooked for me - can't see how that would taste good.
i suppose after the intro offers it can get pricey. which ones are recommended to at least try?
it would be for me and my two kids.
hello fresh?
home chef?
sunbasket?
blue apron?
factor?
it looks like everyplate is the cheapest, but either they skimp on portions or quality, which is it?

We tried hello fresh. Quality and taste were good. Ended up being too expensive for the amount of food.
I went to the websites and grabbed their recipes, then went buy the food from the store. This way would could make leftovers and still come out cheaper.

I did Blue Apron for about a year. I liked most of what they sent and enjoyed trying things I’d never try on my own. Unfortunately my daughter wasn’t a huge fan. She used to say “ugh another Blue Apron?” So I went back to cooking my own meals.
Been thinking of trying another one to change things up a bit.

We have tried a few and enjoyed them, none really stood out as better than the others, do it for a while and when you start baking up with food in the fridge time to stop for a while

i can't see this replacing me cooking from scratch as i enjoy that too much, but coming home from work and having a meal that my kids "made" and want to make sounds like an overall good idea initially.

I did Hello Fresh a few times. A little pricey, but not bad.
My only complaint was the prep time for some of meals.

We've tried Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, and Home Chef.
Blue Apron and Hello Fresh were best in terms of taste and variety, but they can be a little pricey. Home Chef was actually my favorite, as more ingredients came pre-prepared, which cut down prep and cleanup time.
It's like Blue Apron will send you 4 different ingredients to chop and mix for a dressing, whereas Home Chef will just send a pre-mixed pouch of dressing.

We did Hello Fresh for a while. Most of what they sent was pretty good, or really good. I still have their recipe for chimichurri sauce as it's the best I've ever made. I have some of their other recipes we liked and make them every now and then.
In the end, it just wasn't price effective, and the prep time during the week was more than we could commit to. If it was just me and the wife and didn't have things to get kids to almost every night, we'd probably do it again.
They also use a ton of packaging, which I wasn't thrilled about. But I guess it's necessary to keep the food cold and fresh.

I've done Hello Fresh, Sunbasket, Home Chef, and Every Plate.
Hello Fresh - Best food/recipes of the four, but more expensive than the others. Had very little issues with the quality of food, delivery, etc.
Sunbasket - Was not a fan. And back when I did it, the only way you could cancel was by calling and then having them try to talk you out of it. I hear it isn't this way anymore, though.
Home Chef - I actually hear this one is really great, but I started doing it early in the pandemic and FedEx was a complete disaster. When you're expecting a box to come on a certain day and finding out at 6pm that it isn't making it off the FedEx truck that day, you have to scramble to figure out dinner. On top of that, my last few boxes were missing multiple ingredients that were key to making the dish.
Every Plate - This was my favorite of them all. It is very inexpensive compared to others. I'm pretty sure my first week with them was $28. Even when it went up tp full price a few weeks in, it was $40/week. That's dramatically cheaper than I spend in the grocery store if I'm scratch cooking that many meals.
Every Plate is owned by Hello Fresh and they share a lot of the same recipes, so you're getting that Hello Fresh quality for a cheap price. The downside is they recycle a LOT of recipes if you stay with them for any significant amount of time. They might tweak a few things about the recipe (i.e. "BBQ Cheddar Meatloaf" one week, "Turkey Meatloaf" another week), but you're still eating meatloaf or whatever in a closer span than you normally would be. They are hit or miss with the portions. Some we couldn't finish.. others we were still hungry. We are both light eaters so it wasn't a huge deal. With you and two kids, just get the one for 4 people and eat double portions for yourself.

We tried Hello Fresh mostly because I was in a rut and was cooking the same things over and over again
It was ok, but the meals were hit or miss to me
It did remove the stress of having to plan my weekly menu in my head on my Sunday grocery trip, but other than that, I didn't really find it that appealing

We've been doing Home Chef for a while now. I like it for during the week that I can put a good meal on the table in less than an hour. We have been having issues with FedEx not delivering on time and the boxes not arriving cold but they are quick to refund and have also started adding more ice packs to them.
We also tried out Hello Fresh a while back and prefer the Home Chef meals.

We do Home Chef and I enjoy it. The food is usually good quality and easy enough to make.
My only complaints are:
(1) Fatigue from eating prescribed meals every day. We cut back to 3 meals per week to help with this.
(2) They sometimes send the wrong ingredients or recipe cards that don’t match. Customer service has always been helpful and has given us some free meals when this happens.

I've done Blue Apron and Home Chef. Prefer Blue Apron a bit, but if you have kids Home Chef is probably a better choice. Blue Apron seems to always have something in it a kid won't like (radishes, arugula, etc.). Also they are more complicated to make. After awhile Home Chef just began to feel really repetitive and seemed was only value for me not having to go to the store. That said, I do like the idea of getting just enough ingredients so I don't have to buy a jar of fish sauce so I can use one tablespoon and then have it sit in the fridge forever. When I was using it, I typically just started making my own style thing with the recipe as a base.
ETA - times to table can be significantly longer than they say depending on your kitchen skills.

Interesting. Had not heard of this one and will check it out. Having jsut one or two delivered each week would do wonders at breaking out of our ruts we get into.

See, that's what I really wish they'd offer. We did 4 meals per week and it was too much because we get out of the house for dinner either together or separately with friends pretty often. They have a 3-meal option, but I really wish they had just 2.
Instead, I switched to doing the Little Big Meal at Fresh Market each week. Feeds us twice and is only $25. Between that and some of their prepped deals I get on Thursdays, it is totally hands off and I can cook the fun stuff on weekends.

I do Freshly, but it's pre-made stuff that makes it crazy convenient. Like 3-4 minutes to heat up each meal in the microwave.
Some meals are better than others, but it's ok. And you can skip weeks at a time if you get tired of it.

I tried Hello Fresh for a very short period of time. I liked the ingredients, the recipes, and the convenience, but my husband is a picky eater and I figure I can cook plenty of things he doesn’t like without a meal kit.
