It’s two smashed patties, they don’t ask what temp you want…though I’m sure you could ask.
It’s the quality and types of meat they grind up, and while it’s in a ball they roll it in s&p, that sets it apart.

One thing I won't splurge on is a burger. I can cook a burger better than 90% of restaurants with minimal effort on my part. Just keep it simple.

Yeah, around 10 years ago the fancy burger trend blew up
I’ve noticed a bunch of them going out of business now. Many of them are $10-$15 just for the burger. Fries were separate
So a burger fries and beer was $25-30 per person

The restaurant next door to Thorny, the above plate is $18, called Field’s has a $29 burger and fries. So more than $50 for burger and two beers.

not to mention hiring employees has been a crapshoot and the quality suffers

Specialty burger restaurants may be closing but I definitely think it caused regular restaurants with burgers on their menu to step their game up,

Like who?
I always have a hard time getting a burger at a "regular restaurant," but I'm still curious to know who you see as stepping up in this regard. I haven't noticed it, but I could be missing something.

Absolutely. I could name probably 10 very solid burgers in BR, many not from burger places.
I agree with Ched that I make a great burger at home, but I’ll still partake out when I know they have a good one. I’m a sucker for them.

Brown butter, La petite grocery, high hat cafe are all places that would probably be in my top 5 for burgers. All the leblanc & smith places serve their signature burger. Off the top of my head. I like all of these and none are burger stops

Steins does one on Saturdays.
Farmacy's was much better. I suspected things might have been going south there, last time I went and they told me they didn't have it that day.

I think burgers have kind of jumped the shark in the last few years. It's hard to find just a good, old fashioned burger for < $8 now
