I’m thinking about buying an electric smoker.. so go ahead and berate me, and then give me recommendations. Because we all talk shite about them, but it sure is nice laying in bed at 6 am adjusting the temp on your brisket.

If your list of pros is topped by ease of use/hands off then there is nothing wrong with electric. Yeah it’s not a stick burner but it can produce (with some mods and trial/error) good bbq

Master built is a great starter brand electric. There are other higher end electrics if you’re into that though. Go to smokingmeatforums and check out the electric smoker forum

I had one and now I do my smoking on a Weber Kettle if that tells you anything. If I were to look again for a set and forget smoking rig I would look at a pellet smoker.

I already have a grill to do the grill things, I’m more looking for a stand alone smoker with multiple racks and a wide range of heating options. I’d say budget needs to be less than $500 if we’re buying it with mrs vol’s knowledge to be safe. However she is going out of town next weekend so......

I spent $200 on a propane smoker and it’s been well worth it. No need to spend big money on a smoker...a fake one at least.

Masterbuilts are known to have some issues, esp with the mother board, I had 2 crap out on me, one during warranty and the whole thing was replaced , the second out of warranty and I pitched it, loved the size and simplicity of use but could not tolerate the uncertainty of when will this thing crap out in me next when cooking for a crowd

I ended up with a smokin Tex, more expensive and smaller, but so much better built, I added a pellet tube and it has been going strong for years, it only gets up to about 225 which is fine , wish it got a little hotter for chickens, but I have been pleased

Thanks, the last one I had was a Masterbuilt and it also crapped out on me. Good to know it’s a widespread issue and not just an isolated incident.

I started out on a master built electric that did me good. I just upgraded to a pellet smoker and I love it

If you are willing to increase your budget (about double) the CookShack AmeriQue is phenomenal. Had mine 10 years with great results and no problems. Burnschunks for smoke. Locks up like a bank vault yielding very moist meats. Best and easiest butts I’ve ever done. Without smoke the rib rost/prime rib is the best I’ve ever eaten hands down.

Check out Amazing Ribs review of several cabinet style electric smokers. Shouldn't be hard to find one there. Personally I've never used one but the couple of friends I have who use those style smokers both use the Masterbuilt and speak highly of them.

Get a Masterbuilt gravity fed charcoal smoker. The Masterbuilt 560 seems to check all of your boxes off, about $500, electronic operation for setting the temp, plus you get that good charcoal/wood flavor by adding chunks of wood to the feed.

I started out with a WSM. It’s great, but I’m a Weber fanboy. Couple years ago I came across a Masterbuilt on brickseek for $50 so I bought it just to play around. I never use the WSM anymore. Sure, if I nail it on the WSM it’s way better than the Masterbuilt, but on the Masterbuilt I can consistently make real good Q with little effort. Normally when I’m done with a WSM smoke I don’t even want to eat because I feel smoked myself, from my sinuses to my cloths. Don’t have that problem with the Masterbuilt.

Cons of the Masterbuilt:

Chicken doesn’t come out good, but I just use my kettle for chicken.

Food doesn’t get real Smokey, but most in my family don’t really care for smoke so it can be a good thing.

I'm doing ribs on my electric smoker today but the charcoal smoker is going to be used for the brisket next wknd...there's a big difference in my opinion.

Chicken is my favorite thing to smoke on my Masterbuilt. I love mine as a ‘set it and forget it’ smoker. I added the cold smoker attachment so I wouldn’t have to add wood chips so often. The biggest downside is that the chip holder is way too small. You have to add chips every 45 minutes or so without the attachment

I have had 2 Masterbilt electric smokers over the last 23 years and have always cooked everything on them. Easy easy easy. Food is always good. No compromise.
