Dill Pickle Juice Uses

The subject came to mind from something not really food related. The other night I got a charley horse in my leg and it was awful. Drank water to no avail and nothing helped. It was 3 am and I decided to drink some pickle juice. Doing this did not sound appealing at all at that hour, but the charley horse was darn painful. Had 3 BIG swigs of the stuff. It was ice cold and so refreshing and tasty. I nearly just kept drinking it. Brand was Best Maid. The charley horse subsided within the next 10 minutes.
This led me to thinking of uses for pickle juice in cooking. I always have the juice left in the pickle jars.
I've marinated chicken in it before frying. I wasn't crazy about the green tint on the chicken nor the flavor.
I've added it to bloody marys. I've kept the juice in the jar and thrown in some onions and cucumbers which are good.
Do you use the juice for anything?

Back when I was doing IF, I’d drink the pickle juice straight out of the jar for a little pick me up.

It neutralizes stomach acid if heartburn is bad. I’ve had to resort to it a few times in the past.

The wife uses it for leg cramps, just like you did. Works for her very quickly, just like you said.
When I cooked hamburgers at T-Willies Frostop while in high school We poured a cup or two on the grill at closing as part of cleaning the grill. IT would boil up and then as the grill deglazed, we would scrape the crud off with the spatula. Worked very well for cleaning the grill.
You can marinate very thin sliced red onions in it for an hour or two and serve them with BBQ (pulled) Pork. Tasty. The same marinated onions are good on burgers, too.
That's all I got.

I have brined chicken with it before frying. Throw in leftover pickled jalapeño juice too. I know what you mean about the green tint on the meat.
Like others said, it works as a great brine for quick picking stuff like red onions.

Good call. I go through a lot of them so there is never a shortage!

Some athletes sip pickle juice or even commercial drinks that include it as a cramp preventive.
But a July 2023 Washington Post "Ask a Doctor" column suggests that a quick shot of the juice is really how to treat a cramp. It's the reaction of the body to the jolt of the juice on the back of the throat rather than metabolizing it that does the trick.
It's behind a paywall, but you may be able to access it. Headline: "How to get rid of leg cramps? Try pickle juice."

For cramping, athletes have long sworn by pickle juice (strained from jars of dill or kosher pickles) and other acidic substances such as mustard or apple cider vinegar. Experimental data in healthy college-aged men suggests that pickle juice inhibits muscle cramps through a reflex involving a nerve in our throats. It’s why a tablespoon of pickle brine hitting the back of the throat seemed to bring relief within seconds.
Pickle juice may also work for cramps that aren’t induced by exercise. A randomized controlled trial published last year found that a sip of pickle juice reduced muscle cramp intensity in patients with cirrhosis.
Researchers believe this improvement is due to a similar reflex that occurs almost immediately, rather than by how pickle juice is metabolized by the gut.

Stalekracker throws a gallon of pickled jalapeno with juice into his shrimp boils.

I use pickle and/or jalepeno juice in my hush puppies. Occasionally, I'll also use it as the binder on the fish.
It can replace vinegar in pretty much any recipe or other use since that's all it really is. My wife hates the smell of regular vinegar, but loves pickles so I use it in a lot of stuff.

pickle juice, with a little bit of dijon mustard is a good liquid to rub on a brisket before you add your salt and pepper.
I've marinated chicken in jalapeno juice before frying them up to make chicken sandwiches.
And it really is a good thing to have in the refrigerator as a pick me up when dehydrated or cramping.
didn't know about the heartburn cure, but even more reason to keep a jar in the fridge at all times.
