I'll buy an 8 pack of dogs and buns and finish those over a three day period.
What I don't see around is Knockwurst. Maybe I need to go to Whole Paycheck or Trader Joe's. Those have the texture and taste of old time Hot Dogs. Those are good with Chili on a french bread Po-Boy.
I like Hebrew National..but why only 6 dog pack when you have to buy 8 buns?

bonus buns
At like $3/pack I don't care too much. Always leftover buns that go stale. I find they make pretty good garlic bread if you tear them at the hinge. Also get used for PBJs if we are out of sliced bread.

Usually a couple times a year:
Nathan's natural casing dogs pan fried in butter on a slightly toasted cheap top cut white bun with hormel no beans, shredded cheddar, and diced onion for me.

Chisesi stick chili for hot dogs. I like to keep it New Orleans.
Back in the 1970s- 80s Schweggmann's in Gentilly used to serve chili dogs at a snack counter. They used a chili packed in the same manner named Dubuque. It was great, but fatty as hell. It's no longer made. It was far tastier than Hormel.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever had a more perfect chilidog than the footlong chili cheese coney from sonic

What other brands of dogs are good?
Love Nathan's and Hebrew National but I've noshed down a few red Lyke's dogs too. Bun length dogs are a big plus in my book . I'm definitely interested in the bison dogs and will be trying those soon.

What good brand of chili?
I've yet to come across a can chili that I like so I'll usually do mustard and chopped onions as toppings.

Frost Stop in Thibodaux has bomb arse chili dogs. The chili is house-made and the buns are steamed. I'm pretty sure I would have little trouble eating a dozen of those.

Albertsons carries the Dietz & Watson meats and they have their knockwurst and it's pretty good.
You can also order from Riekers in Philadelphia. I order the scrapple and the veal loaf. They aren't too expensive and have all the different sausages.
Riekers
They take a bit of time to get it to you but it is good.

I've got a can of this stuff in the pantry that I haven't tried yet. They're a competitor of Tony Packo's in Toledo. I'll let you know.
I prefer Wolf brand over Hormel but either will do. I've often poured a little beer in there and let it cook down. That doesn't hurt.
Castleberry's coney sauce is awful. Avoid it at all cost.
And Skyline coneys rule. Same with Gold Star.

Wife has homemade chili at home right now. Pretty sure I have some Sahlen's in the freezer. I got a buddy from Buffalo that claims they are the best hot dogs in the world. They are pretty legit.

While my dad was gone (38 months) during WI, my mom lived with her two sisters on Terry Road in Jakson. All three sisters worked at Colonial Bakery. On payday they would go to a place called The Redwood Inn, just behind Battlefield Park, which is on the corner of H-80 and Terry Road. The mustard Cabbage slaw came from there. We have had our chili dogs fixed that way since my earliest memories - maybe 1953.
Old recipe I guess. Redwood Inn is gone now I think. Don't spend a lot of time in that part of Jackson now.
Thanks for the good words about my mom's hot dog slaw.

The hotdog at Five Guys is the best. Get it with bacon, jalapenos and bacon. Add a little mustard and this is hot dog heaven.

To me, the perfect chili dog is...
Nathan’s or Hebrew National
Hormel Chili- no beans
Plochman’s Mustard
Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Jalapeños

It’s also imperative that you boil/steam the weiners as opposed to nuking them in the microwave like some people choose to do
I slide them lengthwise and cook them in a pan until they are blackened. Sort of like Flame-n-Burger used to cook them minus the flame. Do Flame-n-Burgers still exist? I used to eat at the one at The Plaza in N.O. East back in the late '70s - early '80s. GOAT chili dogs (on a hamburger bun if I remember correctly). Don't recall if their burgers were good.

Hebrew national with just quick homemade chili.
Boil dogs, put shredded cheese on bun under the dog so it melts. Then mustard, chili, more cheese, and chopped onions on top.
Pretty much this. Love me some Hebrew National dogs.
