Can’t miss restaurants in Atlanta

Hey, I’ll be going to Atlanta for the first time in a decade. We’ll probably be staying in Alpharetta, but will be heading into downtown at least once. Prefer less expensive (under $25) places. What are some food experiences in the Atlanta metro that should not be missed?

Near downtown...we enjoy Fontaines

But if looking for experiences, Buford highway does not disappoint

If you love breakfast, then Atlanta Breakfast Club next to the aquarium is a must. Absolutely delicious food

Go a little North of ATL, the town of Woodstock! Too many good restaurants. Prime 120, Reel, Ipps, Tenku Sushi!

It has been several years but I would love to get some 3 Dollar Cafe wings. I loved those things.

We just spent a long weekend there. The two places we went in that price range were the Varsity and Mary Mac’s. Both are institutions in ATL.
I leave it to others to suggest a bbq place.

Silver Skillet - good breakfast and lunch spot with some historical character

Heirloom Market BBQ, better than Fox Bros...
Edit: Busy Bee Cafe for authentic soul food.

For good gumbo, po-boys and plates, a place in Decatur called "The Po-Boy Shop and Basement Bar" is good. Nothing spectacular, but good. One of the managers is from Kenner, and they have Leidenheimer bread sent in 3 times a week.

But skip The Varsity.

Good but too crowded unless you are a true early bird. It's just a historical diner, with traditional diner food.

In Alpharetta there are a few places we hit for lunch:
'Cue -- pretty decent BBQ
Bobby G's -- Chicago themed sports bar
Curry Pizza House -- Indian-themed pizza place
Mr. Taco -- inexpensive but good Mexican
Caribbean Fiesta -- pretty good Jamaican fare
El Trompo -- very good Mexican
There are lots and lots of good restaurants in that area.
The Po Boy Shop in Decatur is very good too, but you are a long way from Decatur. City BBQ (several locations) is quite good, as is Heirloom BBQ.
Merry Macs is an institution and the Southern-themed dishes are good, but nothing outstanding. Hankook Taquería is a Korean/Mexican fusion place that is very good. It's nothing fancy, but it's very good.
Lot's of good restaurants in Atlanta and plenty of different cuisines to choose from.

In Alpharetta, Kimchi Red is solid. As others have said, Buford Highway has many great spots and Heirloom BBQ is great. Yakitori Jinbei just outside the perimeter is also good and was on DDD. Korean fried chicken and katsu curry ramen.
Can’t miss in Downtown for under $25? Won’t have that many options. I’d skip Varsity. Just awful in my opinion. Chili is terrible. Holeman and Finch, Publik Draft House, E Ramen, Alma Cocina may be under $25. Haven’t been to Vortex in a while, but it’s an interesting place!

the town of Woodstock!
He asked for under $25. Woodstock is a haul and so overpriced.

Only go to the Varsity if you want to be able to say you went to the Varsity. The food is below average, and that's being polite.
I've heard a few long-time residents say the food used to be good but it is now just for nostalgia.
