Woodstock is a haul and so overpriced.

Wait, you think Woodstock is overpriced compared to other areas of Atlanta? That's where I go when I want a decent night out for a reasonable price.

I agree it's a haul from where the OP will be.

Buford highway does not disappoint

Definitely the best area to go if you want some authentic dishes from most any culture.

There is a Latino mall called Plaza Fiesta. If you don't speak Spanish, you'll be the only one. One of the stalls called Las Recetas y Antojitos de la Abuela has the best Quesabirria tacos I've ever had. Go hungry and hit several stalls. Hard to beat outside of Mexico City.

There are also some amazing Asian places in that area also.

For my birthday this year, I made my wife go on a full-day self-guided food tour off Buford Highway and hit up as many places as possible. I didn't find anything I didn't enjoy.

Buford Highway is a ways from Alpharetta, but it is full of Mexican, Hispanic, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, and other ethnic cuisines.

Nam Phuong is a good Vietnamese place on Buford Highway.

Desta is not on Buford Highway, but is not too far away. It's a good Ethiopian place.

Only go to the Varsity if you want to be able to say you went to the Varsity. The food is below average, and that's being polite.

It's actually jarring how terrible that place is if you go in blind like I did.

I just happened to have an hour by myself while my wife was doing something downtown and I was like hell why not. Over by Ga Tech, I remember Todd Blackledge going for the Taste of the Town segment he used to do, pretty sweet sign that you see from the interstate... You don't realize the mistake you've made until you're standing at the counter and look into the kitchen and see what you're about to get.

That was my one and only visit.
