This is what I do. I use the knife to hold the shell while I pull the shrimp out with the fork. The rest of what you said you do lost me, but I’m a simple man (ball is on the rim, Baloney and HoJo… will either of you tip it into the basket?)

Not exactly like this, but similar enough to this that, after you watch the video and then read what I wrote again, hopefully it should make a bit more sense:

I think this is a big reason. I don't know if there are any other reasons, but I don't like it. It's a PITA to get to the tail meat when the shrimp are in a dish meant to be eaten with a fork.

I think you guys are vastly overthinking it.

Most shrimp with the tail on are meant to simply be bitten off at the tail. Use your knife to cut the tail off or bite it off.

It seems like a trend that's become more popular in the past year. Is there some reasoning for leaving the tails on?

It's been that way for a while. The reason is to make it look larger and prettier. Your saucy fingers be damned!

I like the tender tail meat and I paid for it.

I'm not overthinking anything. I would just prefer not to put my hand in a bowl of food whenever possible

Anywho, you do not know what you are talking about. I'm a master at presentation. I present to you my Pollo LA'Orange as evidence:

Oh, I followed those posts, I just chose not to comment since your dish spoke for itself. It was a masterpiece of deconstructed complexity.

I just can’t join the hoi polloi in this thread talking about dipping their fingers into pasta dishes. I prefer to use my fork and knife in an eating establishment like Joshjrn. If I lose a little tail meat in the process, I’m not whining about it.

I can't believe anyone would really need a video to figure out how to do that?

It's possible to peel a shrimp such that you get every last bit of that meat in a peeled de-tailed shrimp. It will look like a tiny little fantail of meat at the end. It takes a bit more care and effort than the way most places are peeling shrimp, though.

My guess:

Once upon a time, some restaurant thought leaving the shell on the tail would show that they had started the dish in their kitchen with fresh whole shrimp.

The idea must have caught on, and enough restaurants copied the idea, so that shrimp processors started selling frozen shrimp that way - shelled except for the tail.

Now we live in a world where ignoramuses 30 years behind the curve think shells on shrimp tails is a sign of quality.

I assume they only do it because it makes it look fancier.

Same reason they leave the paws on when they cook coon.

I once saw a sign on the side of the road in Port Gipson MS advertising "Coon 4 sale. $15. All with foots".

You always have to make sure one foot is on the coon to make sure it’s not a cat.

I find it extremely annoying when I have to pick out all the shrimp, separate the tails, then eat.

I was thinking the "with all foots" deal might be to prove it wasn't caught in a trap? Would that maybe matter meat-wise?

shite, but I misread. It's "all with foots." I think your explanation is correct here.
